#BREAKING Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia launch coordinated and frantic diplomatic offensive to stop regional states from recognising Somaliland. Today in Addis Turkish leader Erdogan openly and publicly called on Ethiopia not to recognise Somaliland. This is a signal Ankara is now shifting away from quiet diplomacy, upping the ante in a bid to escalate pressure/dissuade PM Abiy. My long experience with Ethiopia tells me this sort of public pressure, by outsiders is resented by Ethiopian leaders and often counterproductive. Ethiopia is a deeply stubborn state and in the end Ethiopia does what Ethiopia wants. Ask Egypt. Erdogan's visit comes just five days after Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan Bin Abdallah visited Addis to talk to Abiy over the same issue. In the photo op, the Saudi Prince and Abiy looked glum - a hint the discussions may not have been as cordial as the final communique suggested. Meanwhile, Erdogan's plan over the weekend to appeal to the UAE directly and fly to Abu Dhabi to meet MbZ did not materialise for reasons as yet unclear. Egyptian President Al-Sisi, for his part, visited the UAE on 9 Feb to also pressure MbZ directly not to recognise Somaliland, among other issues (Sudan, Gaza/Israel). Official pictures showed two seemingly in a heated conversation over lunch, lending some credence to informed speculation Cairo's bid may have failed.
