@FantasyWanderer @fishrungood @timsoret Your use of "only" tells me you don't have the intellectual capacity to understand the marginal effect of things. People already help in the situations you mentioned. They'd help more if it was easier to help.

Assuming no possible coordination: If everybody was rational, we would all individually pick red & be safe without needing coordination, trusting that the sum of individual interests would lead to the most optimized outcome. Except that many humans are irrational & dogmatic, and driven by idealistic / empathetic concerns, would pick blue, even if that requires coordination which is not guaranteed & which puts them as risk. Knowing this, even if you’re initially inclined to vote red, the actual moral choice, to avoid the death of those willingly putting their lives at risk, is to vote blue to maximize the chances of saving everybody. In short, if you know that others are not perfectly rational agents, to save them you have to go along with their irrationality, which is counter intuitive.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

i completely missed this discourse the first time so lemme try. i pressed blue without thinking about it, my gut reaction was "blue is prosocial and red is antisocial," on reflection this still seems right to me galaxy-brain game theory arguments in favor of red are completely missing the point. as others have pointed out, empirically blue wins, and this is a test of theory of mind more than anything else. the actual outcome is determined by what everyone else who is not you actually does, not by what game theory says they should do a certain kind of nerd thinks game theory is just the "correct" framework for reasoning about this type of situation and that is absolutely not true either and can be questioned on intellectual grounds and not just vibes. among other things game theory assumes every participant is perfectly selfish and perfectly """rational""" (and that this is common knowledge among the participants). this is just totally false as a description of the actual world! multiple parents pointed out that parents have to remember that this test includes their children. and obviously the vast majority of people have never even heard of game theory but they do know what selfishness and selflessness are funnily enough there's LW stuff around exotic decision theories that's actually relevant here. one of them i would describe roughly as "when you make a decision you are choosing to live in a world where people like you make decisions like that" and i'd rather choose to live in a world where people like me are prosocial "blue is prosocial and red is antisocial" is also a self-fulfilling prophecy, the more people who believe it the more true it becomes. so believing it is partly a bet on how much other people believe it, partly an act of hyperstition to make it true. few

@fishrungood @timsoret All i know is, when i see a burning building there isnt a line of people going in to save people. When a shooting hapoens most people run, almost no one stops to help at a car crash. Fire fighters & paramedics are understaffed. Why should i believe that theyll all step up now?

There’s a cool feature in Latin, the gerundive, which is a verbal adjective implying that something should/must happen. A few of them survive into English words: If someone should be revered, they are “reverend”. If something must be cut away, it is a “dividend”. My favorite: if a story is so good that it simply must be read by everyone, it is “legend”! Latin reverendus/a, dividendum, and legenda. Pretty cool that what is sometimes a difficult concept for Latin learners is actually present in English, albeit rarely. Do let me know if there are any good ones I’ve missed.

So why exactly is there a huge quantum computing bubble at this point in time? Is it just that the excess froth from the AI bubble needed somewhere to go, and "quantum computing" has a cool ring to it?

#Karachi is flooded. No doubt. This is #Lyari River just before the heavy rain. See the solid waste accumulated under the bridge near Lyari Expressway intersection. And yes, this solid waste was pushed into the ocean by the rainwater after rain.

> I want to clean my c++ libraries without destroying everything else Are you referring to gcc or other build tools? My guess is that there might be some version incompatibility introduced in the latest versions of these tools, although this is quite rare since they are generally stable. If other users are experiencing similar issues, the problem likely lies in their makefile or CMake configuration, which probably needs fixing. It's a nightmare to keep track of and reset, especially because their build setup seems to make changes at a global level. The best approach is to use an isolated environment such as a virtual machine, a container, or even Qubes OS (qubes-os.org/intro/) to create a disposable qube for building. You can discard the qube if something goes wrong. However, I'm not sure if this would be compatible with CARLA, as I haven't used CARLA myself.

@jamesklassic @BranArtHouse @inceptstellar I have now seen multiple frames showing "how much is lost", but I have not seen a single one yet, where something meaningful is in the "lost" regions. I would be happy to be proven wrong, and shown that there are scenes where something important is lost.

@emabutironicaly @ChessProblem In Iran women players are forced to wear hijab. So how is that okk? If a Hindu, Christian or atheist woman doesn't want to wear headscarf what would be the course of action for the arbiter. In 2018 Soumya Swaminathan had to withdraw from a tournament in Iran due to this.
