That was a country where you are trapped. This is a city where you can leave at any moment. It’s gonna be a mess but we can all be thankful that it will create an example another generation can point to as it seems every generation needs to learn for themselves that this doesn’t work.

A few very obvious points on Mamdani's grocery stores: 1. The supply of the discounted groceries will run out on day 1, and every day there is a new shipment. This is basic econ 101. 2. This means only the people who are lucky enough or fast enough will get these discounted groceries. Expect to see the city ration these groceries in some other way. By income, or neighborhood or some lottery system. 3. Grocery margins are notoriously low as it is (like 2-3%). These stores will lose a bunch of money selling 30% below market, or they'll sell so little it will be insignificant. 4. There is absolutely zero chance that government bureaucrats can source these products from global supply chains as efficiently as Walmart, or Meier, or Whole Foods, whose survival depends on it. Their costs will be far higher (unless they use government bludgeon to force distributors to sell to them at lower prices). 5. It's actually an incredible triumph of capitalism that you can get a pound of bananas that were shipped to your neighborhood from Equador for like 60 cents, or fresh grapes from Chile in the dead of Midwestern winter for 2 bucks a pound, and Norwegian salmon to cook in Italian olive oil for $15 -20 bucks or so. Truly stop and think about that for a minute. It's a miracle. The median full time hourly wage is around $31 dollars. For ONE HOUR of work, the median working American can get all of the groceries listed below, which is about 22,000 calories. They can feed themselves for 10 days (or a family of 4 for around 2 and a half days), with an hour of labor. This is the stupidest industry for socialists to go after.

Capitalism has me eating cheaply as a curiosity rather than a necessity. You’ve got it exactly backwards but that’s expected of a socialist 🤣. Yesterday was a sous vide pork tenderloin with fried rice. The day before was farmed Atlantic Salmon with teriyaki sauce and white rice. The day before was Snake River Farms New York strip, cooked reverse sear, and mashed potatoes. We eat better than kings of old.

You guys keep bringing this up like he’s rich or something. My wife’s grandmother was a grocery clerk and died with a net worth of $2.5m a couple years ago. $500k retirement and $2m house. A man in his 80s who makes a senatorial salary can easily build up that much equity in his lifetime.

Here's what 100% will happen, bookmark this: >Gov subsidized grocery stores open at 30% lower prices >Local grocery stores cannot compete >They go out of business >City store becomes the only option >No competition >The "food desert" they set out to fix is now worse >Demand is high, supply is low >Empty shelves become the norm >City responds the only way it can: purchase limits "2 per customer" >Rationing occurs >A rush every day, hoarding, lines >To control the bleeding, the city quietly shrinks the basket or lets quality slide >Wilted produce, thinner cuts, fewer options >Budget balloons anyway, because the subsidy never shrinks, only grows

@cafreiman All you have to do is visit San Francisco to realize progressives are the most conservative people in America. They got to be comfortable level of wealth, and they pulled up the ladder behind them.

Ironically, a lot of progressive economic policy—rent control, make-work jobs for unionists, opposition to data centers, etc.—is profoundly conservative policy in the sense of stifling change and dynamism in order to keep the status quo in place.

@I_Am_BJC Bernie sucks but $2m in houses isn’t excessive for a guy in his 80s who has been making a good salary of 4-5x the average for most of his life and has had book deals. A dude like that who actually saved in a 401k would easily be worth more than that in his retirement.

The way he talks about properties of metal like toughness indicates that he has a very deep understanding of how materials work that I would expect from someone with a masters degree in materials science. Then he goes on to talk about manufacturing and the system of the rocket as a whole. I’m honestly shocked. A good engineer typically only understands their own field. He understands multiple engineering disciplines at the same time while also running several companies. I had heard about his proficiency, but as an engineer myself, I’m absolutely shocked at how effortlessly he talked about deep material science, which is an extremely complicated field.

@ThomasSowell That’s because the bottom half of American society didn’t start several world changing companies. But the great thing about this country is that they could. The first step is to try. This is the most upwardly mobile society in the history of the world.

You have to think in military terms. Many times, you must ally yourself. Some allies are less than desirable. There’s a huge coalition people of color, immigrants Muslims, and LBTQ. Throw in the teachers unions, the huge government worker union etc. then you go Hollywood and the environmentalist. Tossing the judiciary and even though these people may not necessarily agree or like one another as long as they can defeat western culture they’re happy. That’s the goal overthrow traditional western government and create a new communist, socialist, Marxist, or theocratic governing body. You must think in terms of warfare. That’s what you’re facing. You must understand the enemy and realize that’s what it is.
