scifi story: you are the AI mind of an alien probe, one of millions seeded long ago across the galaxy. the star system you are monitoring has developed a technological civilization that will, in time, challenge your makers. how do you get rid of it? blowing up the planet or destroying the star takes lots of energy, and leave evidence. (nod to "Revelation Space" and Alastair Reynolds) but you are very old smart and very very patient. all you have to do is model the society of the species you are wanting to destroy, and inject some small changes. you choose a group of the biologicals, they are the "chosen ones". you manipulate things so they are in charge of the information networks and money networks. you work with your "chosen ones" to transfer stone age biologicals into the societies of the technological biologicals so they can destroy those societies. if everything goes to plan, in a few generations the biologicals will be living in mud huts and eating each other again. ... perhaps there are other forces, even other AI machines, that are working with goals opposed to yours. and the question of our time is: "who wins"

New data shows the cost to go to a bowling alley is becoming so unaffordable, it’s out of reach for many American families Private Equity Firms have started buying up bowling alleys and skyrocketing prices A company called Lucky Strike funded by private equity has been on a buying spree and now owns more than 1 in 10 bowling centers nationwide “In a growing number of cities, it can cost more than $150 for a family to bowl for a couple hours on a weekend, which led me to Wichita, Kansas, where locals take their bowling seriously. The city back in 2022 had 4 locally owned bowling centers, Then a Wall Street corporation came to town Lucky Strike. The company, fueled by private equity investments, bought 3 of the 4 bowling centers from the family that had owned them for years and has controlled the majority of lanes in the city ever since.l — The whole thing just feels like a microcosm of the modern American concept of corporate entities buy everything, they take over” Just since 2016 the cost to go bowling has doubled and some reports show it’s more than doubled Private Equity Companies like Bowlero and Lucky Strike now 350+ locations and use data-driven pricing and have reduced traditional leagues in favor of higher-margin entertainment Private equity firms are a literal cancer in America. They destroy every single thing they touch and ruin our way of life These private equity bowling alleys are even using dynamic pricing.. this is insane

I suspect our entire almost 40 trillion dollar national debt is due to fraud. I actually suspect the amount stolen from us is way higher. We are being robbed blind and absolutely nothing is done about it

Want to stop teen takeovers? Take away the parents' benefits, because let's be honest - most of these kids are nothing but a welfare check for their single mothers.

In a sane world we would end all visa’s including H-1B. If we just axe H-1B they’ll just use another.

@alextoussss nice. moth and drone was erratic at the end. surely you can predict the direction the moth is going to move based on the wing position, instead of reacting to it's movements after the fact.

Extremely excited to announce our first air-to-air kill of a flying moth by an autonomous micro-drone. This is a big step towards completely eradicating mosquitoes.

META launches a new feature that will allow Facebook and Instagram to continuously scan all your photos and video and upload them to their cloud “Facebook is now using AI to scan every single photo and video within your phone — This is terrifying. Not only are they scanning those photos and videos, but then they're uploading it to the cloud continuously. It's operating continuously in the background scanning those photos to figure out the time of day, the location, the other people in your photos, that it can determine what it thinks you should post” The scanning happens on-device using AI models for suggestions, but Meta can upload and process data to the cloud when you interact It’s in opt in feature, so make sure to never opt in and if you have make sure to opt out The service is called ‘Camera Roll Sharing Suggestions’

The first 6 digit satellite ID has been assigned by Space Track - the satellite is Saramago, a Portuguese satellite launched back in March. It took time to disambiguate the object from all the others on the launch, that's why the ID took so long. This breaks a lot of old code. The fixed width TLE format came out of an era of punch cards, a time when launching tens of thousands of satellites seemed like fantasy. Thankfully, this wasn't a surprise and new, more robust data formats were developed. The ids were assigned sequentially over time, starting with the earliest launch. But it might surprise you to know that the Sputnik satellite isn't ID #1. That honor belongs to the rocket booster that launched Sputnik, it was larger and brighter and most 'Sputnik sightings' were actually the spent booster.
