Podcasts are the most potent medium for creating culture. Memes are a close #2. Everything else is irrelevant these days.

Niko 📚 Sovereign Individual
Education: Free and Compulsory by Murray Rothbard, in short: 1. Every child learns at his own pace, in his own direction. A classroom where one teacher instructs thirty children must cast them all into one mold, and whatever pace the teacher sets harms the slow, the quick, and the merely different alike. Rothbard calls it what it is: a Procrustean bed. 2. Schools do not exist because they are the best way to learn. They exist because individual tutoring is expensive and mass tutoring is cheap. A cost workaround mistaken for the institution itself, then made mandatory. 3. Ultimately, the question becomes: when parents and the state disagree, who has the final authority? And the state's defining feature is that it is the only institution allowed to use violence. Reason does not develop under coercion. 4. Compulsory schooling was not invented by educators. Martin Luther, 1524, to the German princes: if the state can compel men to bear spear and rifle, it can compel children into school, "because in this case we are warring with the devil." The first Protestant state school systems began emerging in the same period. The institution was born as a tool of religious compulsion and later adopted new civic and national purposes without abandoning the principle of compulsion itself. 5. The prototype of the modern national compulsory system: Prussia, 1717, one of the most militarized and authoritarian states in Europe, under a king who "treated his kingdom as a schoolroom and flogged his naughty subjects unmercifully." After Napoleon crushed Prussia, educational reform and universal conscription advanced together as part of the national rebuilding effort. American educators toured Prussia in the 1830s and wrote reports urging imitation. They got their wish. 6. In the English-speaking world it began with the Massachusetts Bay theocracy, 1642: a colony where only church members could vote and the state could seize children from parents it judged unfit. England had no public school system at all until 1870. In 1859 Mill wrote that scarcely anyone favored compulsory education; by 1905 Dicey wrote that scarcely anyone opposed it. One generation, and the unthinkable became the unquestionable. 7. Spencer's question ends the debate: education by the state, for what? To make good citizens. And who decides what a good citizen is? "The government: there is no other judge." Rothbard's own analogy: a government chain of compulsory newspapers that all children must read would be called tyranny by everyone. That is the school system, applied to minds instead of news. He wrote this in 1971.
