I won the lottery to hike the Subway in Zion and went with two of my kids last week. It's an OK hike; not as fun as the Virgin River Narrows or Hidden Canyon nor as scenic as Angels Landing or Observation Point. The hike is pretty easy, just about 9 miles mostly flat.

@lavaracer It isn't that bad because the Supai force you to spend at least one night in the canyon. The hike itself only takes about 4 hours.

My daughter talked me into taking her to Havasu Falls in Arizona last week. If you've ever thought of going, I would suggest March as a great time. It was warm (not hot) and there was almost no one there; the water was warm enough for swimming, too.

@komonews I've been to every state in the USA and say, with certainty that the infrastructure is crumbling only in deep blue states - yet these same states tax and spend two to three times as much as the red states where the roads are great. What explains this?

@BenjiBacker Why haven't deer evolved to avoid road collisions, yet? It would seem that the deer smart enough to avoid roads would have an evolutionary advantage.

While we're discussing wildlife overpasses, let's discuss why they're important: They prevent ~97% of wildlife collisions They singlehandedly save wildlife populations (and migration patterns) They can save our country $10B per year BUT...they (should) cost $5-15M, not $100M

@MCCCANM I avoid this type of situation by never answering my phone. Like, literally never. I have the ringer turned off and the the phone app is so hidden that it would take me several minutes to figure out how to make a phone call ever I ever wanted to do so.

I almost got scammed on the phone just now. They ran a good game, until I told them I wouldn’t give my credit card, then hung up. They claimed to be from the Sheriff’s Office & I had failed to appear. Had badge numbers & ranks that at first glance seemed to check out. Address & telephone numbers given check out. One had a name of a real deputy that I found on the internet as the conversation was ongoing. They’ve done some homework. Lots of jargon & I must admit, it sounds legit. They had my name, address & last 4 of my social…I stupidly agreed that this was my data. Dumb, dumb, dumb…how could I be so dumb? The number has no caller ID. That should have been my first clue. I should have also figured out that if you have a warrant, they don’t generally call you. I don’t know what I was thinking. Anyway, the scam is that you were sent a jury summons for some complicated multi-district thing. You didn’t appear, but signed it & said you would. When you say that’s impossible & don’t remember receiving a summons, they ask about any postal thefts. In my case, I had credit cards repeatedly stolen about 6 months ago. In hindsight, I also don’t think you have to sign jury summons…but I don’t actually recall. Anyway, you didn’t appear & now they want to handle it either criminally or by converting it to a civil thing. I don’t think you convert criminal to civil, but I’m not a lawyer & these guys have a good script. They’ll read you a bunch of prepared statements. Ask you questions. Now I’m afraid they have a recording of my voice they can use AI to manipulate. They transfer you to the guy who handles this stuff…which was suspicious, but maybe… It’s a Captain. 🚩 Red Flag. At this point, I took down as much info as I could…I’d been writing it all down, citation #, warrant #, the lot. I bided my time until he informed me I’d have to pay a hold until the matter could be resolved by my coming into the Sheriffs Department for a signature analysis. I told him I could come down to the Sherriff’s office right away, he said they’d have to arrest me if I showed up & I told him to fuck off. Scam confirmed. Fees over the phone & signature analysis are both 🚩 🚩. I called the Sherriff’s Department non-emergency line & the dispatcher immediately told me it wasn’t real…though she can’t verify if I have any kind of infraction outstanding over the phone. Which is good, but the point of the scams is to rattle you & they had done at least some of that to me. In hindsight, I should have known from the start it was a scam & refused to verify anything. Big mistake on my part & I’ll be locking stuff down now. Nevertheless, an elderly person or someone challenged may fall for this, and I want you to be aware. The dispatcher told me you can report this to the FCC, though she didn’t have the exact web address. I’ll find it. You may also be able to report it to the FBI’s “IC3”, an Internet Crime division, apparently. I know nothing about it. Anyway, now you know the scam.

@ChristinaPushaw @Indian_Bronson There is no reason, whatsoever, that it should take until age 38 to learn neurosurgery. It is not any harder than many other complex fields that don't require 100 hour weeks - and if he was actually working that many hours, it would have been counter-productive.

What if a man top 0.01% IQ and learning to do brain tumor surgeries then working 90-100 hours a week as chief resident until he can finally become an attending neurosurgeon by age 38 and have some time to devote to meeting and vetting his future wife? Is that man a "failure"? I do not think so AT ALL. This example is actually someone I know, and very common in professions like that.

If one squints, it can be discerned the biggest factor in these young men's estimation of their worth is whether or not they are married fathers who provide for a wife and children Social conservatives would do well to ponder, then, what exactly is going on with *young women*?
Brad Wilcox@BradWilcoxIFS

Stunning Share of Young Men View Themselves as Failures Fully 42% of young men (18-29) think of themselves as "a failure." Esp. true for young men who ✔️ Don't have a college degree ✔️ Not working full-time ✔️ Don't have wife and kids New @FamStudies:

@txsalth2o @ScottGustin You couldn't pay me to go on a Disney Cruise. I went on one cruise, for my parents' 50 anniversary and I describe cruising as just like prison, but with more food poisoning and sea sickness.

7 years ago, my mother used her inheritance to take her children and grandchildren on a Disney Cruise. It was the first time all 5 adult kids were willing to get together, because it was a free Disney Cruise, so they set aside their issues with each other and went. On the flight home, my dad noticed his ankles were swelling. Three weeks later, he was diagnosed with Double Hit Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He passed this last February. His parting words to the kids were, "Don't wait. Take the trip. Go on the vacation." My mom had been considering using her money to renovate the kitchen instead. She is so grateful she has those wonderful memories and pictures with her late husband, children, and grandchildren instead.

Why would any 18-29 year old man consider himself a "failure" for not having kids yet? Average age of marriage in the USA is like 32 for a man. There are very few things anyone can do in their 20s, apart from committing crimes or getting addicted to drugs, that can actually render such a young person a "failure" at life.

Florida passed a bill allowing DeSantis to remove elected official who promote DEI initiatives, such as Pride. With vague language, the bill is the most extreme of its kind in the US, creating confusion and fear for local govts that recognize LGBTQ residents and other communities. #DemsAbroad people.com/florida-passes…
