@20committee Haig died relatively soon after the War - having fought for pensions and benefits for his men - and he was mourned throughout the Empire. Haig was revered by his men. So was Monash (still Australia's largest gathering was his Depression era funeral). x.com/GrayConnolly/s…

@EricIdle Yes! I saw it when it first aired. I kept my eyes peeled for him -- and I completely missed him. I was patting myself on the back for recognizing Michael Palin in that scene, and there was George. And it never twigged until the credits.

@JohnCleese With the abolition starting in Upper Canada I believe, 1793 thanks to John Graves Simcoe (the guy depicted as a psychopath in "Turn"). It was imperfect because people who already were slaves stayed so unless emancipated. But there were no new ones and no more born into it.

The British were slaves during the Roman occupation for over 300 years, and then slaves under the Norman French for another 300 years
So we should do well out of reparations, and then get a bonus for being the first country to abolish slavery

Lenny Henry demands Britain cough up £18 trillion in reparations, insisting “All Black British people deserve it for slavery.” This ignores Britain’s historic stand: abolishing the slave trade in 1807 and unleashing the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron, which seized 1,600 ships and freed 150,000 Africans at massive cost in blood and treasure. Yet today, per the Global Slavery Index, Eritrea, Mauritania, Nigeria, and Jamaica (Henry’s parental homeland) still suffer shocking levels of modern slavery. Billing today’s British taxpayers for 200-year-old sins while turning a blind eye to ongoing African and Caribbean horrors? Pure selective outrage and hypocrisy. Focus on ending slavery now, not chasing guilt cheques. Maybe the comedian should stick to jokes instead of peddling selective history.
