A crazy day….. Two months ago I attended the Trump rally in Butler Pa. Was a volunteer helping with parking, crowd control, hanging out water on a very hot day. Carried case after case all day long. People were dropping from the heat all day and helped evacuate a half dozen myself. Later found out there were over 325 calls for EMTs. Volunteers were supposed to sit in grandstands but had to be seated by 2:30. Trump wasn’t scheduled until after 5:00 and I didn’t want to just sit in the stands under the hot sun that long so I kept working. Little did I know that would possibly save my life! I took one last case and went into the VIP section to hand out water. Then just found a seat there….snarky way to get a front row seat. I was about 25 yds to Trump’s right and slightly on front. He started talking and about 6-7 minutes in the shooting started. Bullets travel 3-4 times faster than sound so you hear the bullet pass by before you hear the mussel blast. Sounds like the crack of a bull whip or an electrical arc, which is what I thought it was. Then the second round went past and I ……and everyone else…. knew we were under fire. Most of the crowd dropped as one in one big wave. I heard three shots, a short pause, than a burst of 6-8 shots. A pause of 12-15 seconds and then a final shot that seemed like it was either much further away or a smaller caliber. Looked at the stage and saw two guys in full combat gear with automatic rifles scanning the crowd looking for another shooter……that cemented the fact this was really happening. And knowing their adrenaline was pumping, hearts pounding trigger fingers twitching meant one wrong move could get you shot! Asked people around me if Trump was ok and one said he had blood on his hand. About that time the Secret Service agents stood him up but all I could see was the agents backs. Then I saw Trump raise his fist, the crowd cheered and I knew he was ok. Couldn’t send him yell fight fight fight as I was behind them. The crowd chanting USA, USA, right after bullets flying overhead was crazy. I looked around and saw people in the stands where I was supposed to be frantically waving for help. Started moving in that direction but was very difficult as there were people all over the ground in fetal position and covering their heads. Also steel folding chairs everywhere. People were screaming, some crying. Others telling me to keep down. Total chaos yet no one stampeded. And a lot of very angry people yelling the media gaggle. As I was stepping over people I realized any one of them could have been shot so I was yelling out ‘anyone hit?’ and asking people on ground if they were ok. Fortunately no one on ground was hit. By the time I worked my way to the stands a couple state troopers and civilians carried out the body of the guy that was killed. There is a NBC News clip with me standing there. I looked around and saw another person on ground with what looked like a wound in the abdomen. There were a lot of people helping so I looked around for others but thankfully no one else was hit. About that time Secret Service agents snd police were telling people to leave the area so EMTs could have room to work. I took apart one of the barriers so people had a place to get out. Then just helped people get up off the ground or out of the stands. Lots of people in tears, a few throwing up. Nasty scene, Then slowly walked out trying to process what had happened. It had been a roller coaster of emotions. Confusion on the first shot……then ‘holy hell it’s gun shots!’….fear, anger, concern …. Was Trump hit? Is he ok? ….. he stood up, crowd cheered, he is ok!….. was anyone else hit?…..yes, gotta help. Saw the body and knew someone was dead…..really sad….try to help anyway I can.
