@TowMemo I guess one difference at the moment would be Western people just taking it on themselves (against owner's wishes), while the JP side is waiting, letting it to the owner. But in the end both sides are striving towards and want legal means to preserve.

The idea that Japanese people don't think games are worth preserving is either misinformed or a cultural misunderstanding. I can't speak for other countries, but in Japan, copyright law gives rights holders unilateral control over when, how, and to what extent their works are made available. Given that, it's clear that the right to preserve a work belongs to the rights holder — and Japanese people respect that. This is because in Japan, the rights holder and the creator are very often one and the same, which means respecting the rights holder is respecting the creator. I know what's coming if I write this: "fuck the law," "art has the right to transgress," "you're just a tamed sheep." But that's simply how the system is structured in Japan. With that said, NPOs, university organizations, and incorporated associations in Japan are currently working to make legal preservation of games possible by non-rights-holding organizations. There are even Diet members actively pushing for this — one of whom was elected with the backing of Japanese gamers. In Japan, the prevailing view is that game preservation should be made possible through proper legal channels. It's only when this is overlooked, deliberately dismissed, or viewed through some strange bias that the puzzling conclusion emerges that Japanese people don't think games are worth preserving.

海賊版論争広まってる。僕は「生きてる環境によって事情違うから、無理に分かりあう必要ないよ」派なので、特にキレる事はないんですけど、「日本のオタクは信仰してるゲームや漫画の作者（神）を踏み躙ってると認知するから、凄い嫌がるよ」というのは情報として覚えてくれれば嬉しいかな、くらい。

日本のユーザーとしては違法視聴で映画やアニメ観る、違法ダウンロードでゲームするだと、その作品を120%で楽しめない。違法手段でエロ漫画読むと120%でシコれないから正規の値段払ってるという感覚なんだけど、これも日本がコンテンツの供給場所に恵まれてるからこそやれてる事なのかもしれない。

@autopilotgod True, but most regular people don't really need to know that/care. Imagine doing this for every translation from whatever culture/language I fear it would become confusing. So changing it to your own language's system isn't a bad choice in probably most cases

@autopilotgod But in cases like this anime, that attracts/targets otaku, who are more likely to know honorifics (even without having to know Japanese), keeping them is fine. It can enhance their enjoyment. So ideally, I guess you want two translations? A normie tl and an otaku tl

@autopilotgod For most people who just casually watch/read some JP media but aren't really into it, honorifics can be confusing and you can still have social dynamics being clear in English tl's. And probably why JP clients ask for no honorifics (argument I've seen mentioned a few times)

@BrandonRStreams Don't think it was hentai, I really think at most it's a kissing scene. Even sensei read it and was "that's it?". But for these ojou-sama's it's the spiciest content imaginable. They discovered the shoujo genre. It being allowed in the end was great and how it should be.

Okay the themes in this event can't have been a coincidence This entire story was about them selling hentai in a posh school that's never seen it before, and everyone trying to hide it from the leader who deemed it "degenerate" and trying to ban it. The main one tasked to take them down not actually having read the contents of the book. Combined with Ui saying those contents aren't even outrageous and they'd know that if they actually read books. It's practically a celebration of Otaku cultue and not letting busybodies take away the things you care about. They even succeed in the end and set up more direct transactions between the schools to share their culture 😭

are we going to act like nearly every shoujo girl isn't the same, with the exact same 'damsel in distress' personality, while the dudes have unique faces. I'm not even going to talk about how every shoujo romance has the exact same 'jealousy/misunderstanding' arc

@nonetosee @autopilotgod Is it fine to not like a work you're translating? Yes. Could you be a better writer than the author? Maybe. But as translator, your job is to be as faithful to the original as possible and maintain the intent of the author. It's hubris stating you improve a work or make changes

@autopilotgod There's this smug superiority among many translators particularly of Japanese works where they think they're better than the original creators.

One of the hardest things in Japanese is the hierarchy speech. Depending on your social standing in comparison to the other person, changes conpletely how you should speech. Removing honorifics you remove bot obly one core aspect ofnjapanese language but how this affect the rrlationship between the characters and by consequence the plot. Thats why its stupid to simply remove honorifics. Stories written by Japanese authors, in its majority, rely a lot on this... and just removing, you are changing core aspects already of the characters and story.
