The US seriously miscalculated the war. They thought a high level decapitation strike will create a power vacuum and spur a revolution/civil war. It didnt. If they keep going for it ground troops is the last option, which is a terrible idea again. Iran might not be able to fight a long conventional war but even afghanistan ran a successful insurgency for a good 20 years. The US seriously need an off ramp,some kind of face saving now.

You’re right that it’s insane one man can drag the country into a major war with no formal declaration – but Congress isn’t literally absent, it’s just failing. A War Powers resolution to force Trump to seek authorization on Iran was introduced and then voted down along party lines, and the House also narrowly refused to block Operation Epic Fury from continuing. The Constitution gives Congress the war power on paper, but as long as majorities on Capitol Hill keep ducking hard votes, presidents of both parties will keep treating that power as optional.

Where is Congress? It’s absolutely insane that one reckless man can escalate this affecting all of us and other nations in the region without Congress doing anything at all.
