Today, in partnership with my friend, French Foreign Minister @jnbarrot, I chaired the International Conference on the Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian Issue and Implementation of the Two-State Solution. This aims to end the occupation, empower the Palestinian people to secure their legitimate rights, and establish their independent state, in line with the Arab Peace Initiative and UN resolutions.

Can’t tell you how many times people have said to me versions of the following since Oct 7 (and before): that white people lack empathy towards brown lives, or that they are cowards. Now as we see the white life taken in Gaza being *the red line*, but not the 40,000 brown lives, including the beautiful Hind Al-Rajab, and we see once again confirmation of what all of us know. And we observe white supremacy in all levels of our daily life. How Ukrainian flags are allowed in football stadiums, but Palestinian flags are a “political statement”. How brown children are “human shields” therefore justifiable collateral, but if there was a single blond blue eyed child in a hospital full of terrorists in New York, the story would be different. How the majority of our white friends were practically silent on Twitter about Gaza until now, when moral outrage is increasingly commonplace, and it’s now comfortable to do so. Even then some have said nothing. And even in our workplaces when calls on the global COVID response have only one or two people of colour, or when we hear European bureaucrats pooh-pooh close to expiry doses in Africa because “they live in huts”. In our personal lives when a white person thinks it is apt to insult our food or ways of eating our food, even if their food tastes like nothing. Or to imply our families are inferior, even if their families have achieved far less. We know the exceptions, the Jeremy Konyndyks, the Alissa Wises, the Damian Sobols, the Jeffrey Sachs’s, the Philippe Lazzarinis of the world. White allyship is love, it is rage, it is recognition. But there is a reason we need diversity within organisations, within power structures, within leadership, within the world order. Because if you need justice and equity to be delivered, especially to Black and Brown people, nine times out of ten someone who is accustomed to comfort is either going to be slower at delivering the justice, or they are going to be perpetrating the injustice.
