These primary nutrients each play a distinct role in plant development, and understanding them helps gardeners choose the right fertilizer for their specific needs. Nitrogen: Promotes Green, Leafy Growth Nitrogen is responsible for the lush, vibrant foliage that characterizes healthy plants. It supports the formation of chlorophyll, which plants use to convert sunlight into energy. Fertilizers high in nitrogen are ideal for leafy vegetables, grasses, and plants in their early growth stages. Phosphorus: Supports Flowering and Fruit Production Phosphorus contributes to strong root development and plays a crucial role in flower and fruit formation.
