Data storage and rebates is one of the coolest @SuiNetwork features, but it’s also something that’s not widely known, so let’s talk about it… As I mentioned in my previous tweets (x.com/_smbrian/highl…), everything on Sui is an object. PFPs are objects. @TypusFinance positions are objects. There’s an onchain clock which is an object. Everything is an object. Similar to objects in real life, objects on Sui can be created, used, and destroyed. The first two actions (created and used) are relatively well understood, so let’s focus on the third – destroyed. In the real world, there’s this concept of recycling used cans. When you buy a can of Coke (which is better than Pepsi btw) and drink it, you have the option to recycle it. In exchange, you get a few coins back as a rebate. Did you know the same concept exists on Sui? On Sui, when you destroy an object, you can claim a rebate in $SUI. Why is this the case? Well, upon consensus, objects associated with transactions are created, and those created objects have to be stored on disk by validators. Disk storage isn’t free, so there’s an economic component to this. Basically, the larger the object, the larger the transaction fee to create and store the object. The SUI gas fee helps incentivize validators to store objects indefinitely. Indefinitely doesn’t mean “forever” on Sui though, and this is a feature (not a bug). When someone wants to delete an object, it also means validators are free to prune the data associated with that object from the disks – they no longer have to store it. Instead of keeping the original locked SUI, the network gives a rebate to the destroyer. This makes Sui a very attractive blockchain for building complex dNFT use cases. Let’s take @_StudioMirai’s upcoming Prime Machin collection as an example. Prime Machin PFP images are 100% stored onchain in 4K resolution. If you’ve seen some of our art teases lately, you’ll also see our art style is handrawn raster style. Unlike 8-bit images which are cheap to store – because they’re comprised of a single color per grid square (and can thus be infinitely scaled up given the user sticks to certain graphics formats), raster images like Prime Machin PFPs resemble photographs in terms of data storage properties. This means even with next-gen image formats like AVIF, Prime Machin PFPs can exceed 1MB in size. To store these onchain and bypass Sui’s 250KB/object limit, we had to invent a data chunking pipeline that stores image data in chunks plus instructions on how to reconstruct images to display on the client side. We only decided on onchain storage because of Sui’s unique data properties. Such a collection would not be scalable on other chains like Bitcoin and Solana, which both have “inscriptions”, but are EXPENSIVE AF. For our collection, launching on Solana would be 100x more expensive, and Bitcoin would be 10,000x more expensive. Impossible. Upon mint, Prime Machin are black and white. Later on, holders will have the option to “level 1 color” their Prime Machin to transform the black and white image into a colored image. For super hardcore holders, there will be a more expensive “level 2 color” option which allows the holder to work with our artist directly on a fully custom coloring. So breaking this down, the above indicates that through the lifecycle of a Prime Machin, there are three different images at play (black and white, color, custom color). At the same time, we want coloring to be immutable! A Prime Machin’s black and white image shouldn’t exist onchain after it’s been colored! This is trivial to implement on Sui thanks to the data storage model and rebate process. When a holder colors a Prime Machin, they’re able to equip a new colored image created by SM and destroy the old image within a single transaction. And in exchange for destroying the image, the holder will receive a $SUI rebate! As we inch closer to mint, we’ll be sharing more cool stuff about Prime Machin and why it’s #OnlyPossibleOnSui!
