so this artist @SHL0MS posted a real Monet painting of Water Lilies and told everyone it was AI generated, and the internet was rage-baited into tearing it apart. then he reveals it was a real Monet, then mints it as an NFT, banks $46k and suddenly everyone looks stupid. now he's getting praised for being some kind of genius, what really what bothers me about this, is why we are so easily manipulated by framing, and why provocateurs keep profiting off the anxiety of artists who are actually doing the work. the real conversation we should be having isn't whether people can tell AI from Monet but rather interrogating the concept of value that antagonizes people about BOTH art and AI, but for completely different reasons. the monetary value of art, especially something like a Monet that's worth millions, is hard and uncomfortable for the average person to comprehend. but then AI is seen as completely fake and therefore valueless, or worse draining value from real creators. and those two reactions are fighting each other in the same conversation, when they are completely seperate debates rooted in objective definitions of "value". what SHLOMS did was clever, but let's be real about what he actually is. his work lives exclusively online pandering exclusively to internet culture and as he says himself, in service of the zeitgeist and chasing attention. this stunt was rage bait designed to go viral and funnel into profit (disrespectful, might I add) but for him to say he has "suffered" for his art when his entire practice is screenshots and social experiments, is a joke. come back and say that after you spend hours locked in a studio inhaling turpentine and microplastics, or injure yourself installing a show, or even pour years of your physical body and mind into work that might never sell. the blood and risk of being a physical artist is not the same as posting a tweet and profiting off people arguing.

This social experiment was great until the mint and is the unfortunate effect from anything popular enough in web3. Certain wallets will throw however much to just push things to a ridiculous amount, which goes to (again) show what truly matters in most cases when it comes to art in CryptoArt. 42k for shits and giggles or to bank on something because it's popular... experiment ruined. Yeah I know some will say it's the final portion to the experiment, it's @SHL0MS, etc. I've heard and seen quite a bit since 2019 but it does not remove the filmy layer of opportunistic reaction that now covers the experiment. I'll never tell people what to spend their money on or pressure but one can only hope that it'll go towards a public good and help artists somehow.

normally avoid these debate but this is too funny & botched i'll offer 2c 1. plz go see some actual Monet. Go visit the MFA (Boston), the Met (NYC), de Young (SF), or better, Paris... p clear some comments never seen a Monet in person. 2. plz look at any Monet for 2min. really see his work. See his signature in brushstroke & color. u should be spending more time with any Monet than a debate on X. 3. humans have been here done this. look up Pictorialism. when we got camera, we spent like 30y making photos that look like paintings. its fun debate, but photo + painting ultimately went diff ways. The sooner we realize this the better it is for human & ai to move ahead in their fundamentally diff ways. 4. plz stop debating ai art on a 'technical' level. if it's not 'Monet' enough today it will get there soon. Regardless, does a Monet like ai really detracts Monet’s creative legacy in anyway? We need to shift the convo back to the human behind the artworks. We have spent too long separating the work from the human. That needs to change. esp now
