The Director Health and Social Development, Amb. Moussa @Meigague will be representing the Executive Secretary, @DrWorkneh, at the 7th Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration (RMFM) on Harmonizing Labour Migration Policies in East and Horn of Africa. The 7th high-level Forum, along with its 5 Technical Working Groups (TWGs), convenes Ministers and technical experts from the countries responsible for ensuring gender-sensitive labour migration governance in the East and Horn of Africa region. The RMFM is chaired by @GovUganda and the @IGADsecretariat, @jumuiya and @IOM_EHSA are the Secretariat.

Last week, ASG @FelipePaullier met with H.E. Cherinet Alem Hariffo, Permanent Observer of IGAD to the UN, to discuss shared priorities on Youth, Peace and Security, youth participation, mental health and regional cooperation.

IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. @DrWorkneh, on behalf of IGAD, extends condolences on the passing of Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of @unmissmedia. A steadfast partner in advancing the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement (RARCSS), his leadership was instrumental in supporting peace in South Sudan. We honour his legacy. May his soul rest in peace.

📹 Continental RCC Knowledge-sharing Workshop 🇷🇼 Last week, ICPAC hosted a week-long Knowledge Exchange and Harmonization of Forecasting Practices workshop in #Kigali, #Rwanda, bringing together Africa's Regional Climate Centres (RCCs). The workshop created a shared space for collaboration and learning across the continent, with discussions covering seasonal forecasting methods, short- to medium-range forecasting, monitoring platforms, data sharing, forecasting workflows, co-production of climate services with end users, and climate information dissemination. Key outcomes were the establishment of an Inter-RCC Community of Practice (CoP) and an Africa Climate–Health Desk. The CoP will focus on youth and early-career climate scientists, fostering peer learning and the joint development of solutions, including the application of emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning for climate prediction. The Africa Climate–Health Desk, on the other hand, aims to bridge the climate and health communities by strengthening collaboration among meteorological services, health officers, researchers, and regional partners. The event was held as part of the #WISER PASS-EA project, in partnership with @ACMAD_org , @AgrhymetInfos, the @metoffice, @AGRA_Africa, @NORCAPweb, @MeteoRwanda, and other African RCCs.

Drought continues to impact many communities in our Region, particularly pastoralists and small scale farmers. Glad to have extensive discussions in Nairobi, Kenya, with scientists from The IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI) and The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD to address ways of addressing this issue by putting Pastoralism and animal husbandry in general at the center of the food security agenda.

Promoting Inclusive and Sustainable Land Governance Secure and well managed land systems are vital for stability and sustainable livelihoods across the Horn of Africa. Through its Land Governance Programme, IGAD supports Member States in improving land policies, strengthening tenure security and promoting fair access to land and natural resources. Particular attention is given to women’s access to land and property rights, recognising that women play a central role in agriculture, family livelihoods and community resilience. By promoting gender responsive land governance and supporting inclusive policy dialogue, IGAD works with Member States and partners to strengthen women’s land rights and ensure more equitable and sustainable land management across the region. #RisingWithIGAD #OneRegionOneFuture

🧒 Advancing Research to Prevent Child Wasting in the IGAD Region The Intergovernmental Authority on Development Centre of Excellence in Nutrition (ICEN) released new research examining the body composition outcomes of children treated for Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) and its implications for policy and practice. The study shows that while treatment supports survival and weight recovery, long-term recovery of lean body mass may remain incomplete, highlighting the need for stronger prevention strategies and improved nutrition interventions. By strengthening research and evidence, IGAD continues to support policies that prevent child wasting and promote healthier growth and development across the region. ✨ Evidence-driven action is key to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. IGAD Permanent Observer to the UN Meets UN Youth Affairs Chief The Permanent Representative of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to the United Nations, Cherinet Hariffo, met with Felipe Paullier, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, at the IGAD Permanent Observer Mission in New York. Their discussions focused on advancing youth engagement, leadership, and opportunities across the Horn of Africa, including strengthening collaboration between IGAD and the United Nations Youth Office to expand youth participation in governance, peacebuilding, and sustainable development initiatives across the region.

H.E. Ambassador @MoussaDjama11, IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan, met with H.E. Dr.@MusaliaMudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, in Nairobi. IGAD Executive Secretary Expresses Condolences Following Landslide in Gamo Zone, Ethiopia The Executive Secretary of IGAD, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic landslide in the Gamo Zone of the Southern Ethiopia Region. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the disaster and extended his sympathies to the affected communities. The Executive Secretary also expressed hope for the swift recovery of those injured in the sudden incident.
