Most people are taught a very simple story about American slavery.
But history is messier.
Anthony Johnson, a Black man from Angola, arrived in Virginia in 1621 as an indentured servant. He gained his freedom, became a landowner — and in 1655 won a court case to keep his
Black servant John Casor as his slave for life. This helped set an early legal precedent for chattel slavery.
In 1830 there were 3,775 free Black slave owners holding ~12,760 enslaved people.
Did you know this part of the story?
Does it change how you see the “simple” version we’re usually taught?

In June 2017, during a major heatwave in the UK, boys at Isca Academy in Exeter, Devon, were not allowed to wear shorts as part of the school uniform: they had to wear long grey trousers.
Girls were allowed to wear skirts so when the boys complained and asked for an exception, the headteacher reportedly said sarcastically: “you can wear a skirt if you like”.
The boys took her at her word: the first day, a small group showed up wearing the school’s plaid skirts and the next day, around 30 boys joined in.

Two brothers stomped a 17-year-old’s chest, broke his neck, and killed him…
They got 6 months and 18 months.
Is this what justice looks like now? 😡⚖️

A nation abandoning law and order cannot and will not succeed.
We introduced the Lawless Cities Accountability Act with @RepBrandonGill. The message is simple: if your city enables chaos, turns its back on law enforcement, or refuses federal help while your citizens suffer, enabling lawless behavior and tolerating violence, you lose federal funding.
American taxpayers should never be forced to subsidize chaos.
LAW AND ORDER.
