Back in 1995 I spent a year in Taiwan to study Chinese. Back then Taiwanese would always refer themselves as Chinese and they were all very proud of it. After over 30 years of brainwashing/social engineering, a small radical minority is pushing for the « we are Taiwanese » but then ultimately they do know they are Chinese, history, their tradition, their culture and most important the mirror/DNA doesn’t lie. Those pushes for independence were never organic, they were heavily funded by NED/CIA/USAID and deep foreign meddling within Taiwan. But things have changed >> Nowadays, the coolest thing to do for young Taiwanese is just to go to the Mainland, those ones just become the most hardcore pro-reunification as they realise how amazing China has become, far from the Western propaganda BS. Taiwanese used to have the American dream, not anymore. The trend is irreversible, China has been patient, the reunification will happen peacefully, naturally. Should KMT win in 2028, it could be a golden age in cross strait relationship.
