Increasingly, we are witnessing a chilling regression towards dark-era police-state tactics specifically targeting defenders of public finance integrity and civic space. TISA is the latest defender of democracy to come under attack - an attack we believe has been instigated by this government. 2/2

Last week, the IMLU Board of Directors and Secretariat convened for our Mid-Year Retreat, a valuable opportunity to reflect on our progress, assess the first half of the year, and chart the course for the months ahead. Through open dialogue and collaborative planning, we reviewed our programme performance, identified key priorities, and began shaping the 2027-2031 Strategic Plan that will strengthen IMLU's impact in advancing accountability, justice, and rehabilitation for survivors of torture and related human rights violations. Recognizing that our staff are central to our mission, the retreat also included dedicated staff wellness and nutrition sessions, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a healthy, resilient, and high-performing team. As we move into the second half of the year, we do so with renewed focus, shared purpose, and a strengthened commitment to protecting human rights and delivering meaningful change for the communities we serve.

The Kenyan government should ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) to prevent enforced disappearances, investigate every allegation promptly and impartially, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure truth and justice for victims and their families. youtube.com/watch?v=MYEYcs…

On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, we stand in solidarity with survivors whose lives have been deeply affected by acts that should never happen in any society. Torture is not only about physical pain, it also leaves long-lasting psychological, emotional, and social scars that affect individuals, families, and communities. As we reflect on this day, we call for stronger accountability mechanisms, survivor-centred rehabilitation, and justice processes that are timely and meaningful. Survivors deserve more than recognition—they deserve action, healing, and dignity. Let us commit to building a society where torture has no place and where every survivor is supported to rebuild their life. #EndTorture

JOINT STATEMENT: Tomorrow’s #JusticeForTheFallen Processions are a test of our nation’s commitment to human rights, accountability, and the rule of law. We call on the National Police Service to facilitate peaceful assemblies, protect every life, exercise restraint, and ensure that no family suffers another loss while seeking justice for those already taken from us. The right to peaceful assembly is protected by the Constitution. Memorials must not become mourning grounds for new victims. Read more: amnestykenya.org/public-safety-… #LestWeForget
