When I was making the Polypaths series, I always felt the real heart of the project wasn't the final image, but the system behind it. The output is just what happens. The real magic is in the underlying logic. There are a bunch of ways to build a generative system, but with Polypaths, every single parameter is tightly linked. They all influence each other, and sometimes, when everything lines up just right, something almost spiritual just appears. The pieces on @verse_works were curated by collectors. But for the @GalerieMet version, I wanted to take the lead as the artist. My goal was to push the system further and see what else it could do. I made a few subtle tweaks, a bit of magic, you could say, and adjusted how the parameters related to each other. The result was a set of works that felt different from the previous series. This whole process really proved to me that in generative art, the structure and architecture are way more important than the final output. This is why the artist's version exists. It's not a replacement; it’s a way to show more of the system's inner life. It reveals how a complex, responsive structure can create an entire ecosystem of variations. It reminds me why I'm so passionate about generative art. It’s not just a tool for making pretty pictures, but a way of thinking, building, and seeing the world.

Calligraphy and painting were never separate.From oracle bones to now, the brush has always been a way to move through the world. Images can be generated.But intention still resists. Ink is not a medium. It is the extension of will.

My approach is more like an artist writing about their own process. Starting from personal experience, noticing things like how fast a stroke was, where I paused, what led to that final flick at the end. All of that carries intention. I also looked at some universal drawing intuitions. How people naturally anchor the corners first before finding the center, or how much breathing room feels right between a large mark and a small one. These “felt right” moments are actually observable and recordable. So rather than engineering a semantic layer, I just tried to document the act of painting itself as honestly as I could, and let the data speak.

InkField started as a study of digital ink and brush behavior. Over time it turned into something else, a system that can reconstruct a drawing from the memory of its stroke paths. But that’s the strange thing about the time we live in. Somewhere along the way I realized I had also opened a window for robots. Let’s see what we might end up creating together.

InkField | 墨域 is about to be released. From the first version, both humans and bots will be able to create on it together. In a way, the system reflects the time we live in. Humans and machines are already living in a kind of symbiosis. I’m generally an optimistic person. But I have to admit, 2026 feels a little heavy right now. Maybe the work will reflect that. Maybe it won’t. Either way, wishing everyone well. I still believe the dawn is coming.

EditArt has been a rare space of freedom and experimentation. In a time like 2026, when so much spirit feels lost, it was a small light for many of us. Thank you Piero for creating it. My thoughts are with his family.🫂
