@constans @opinionatedobs7 To a large extent the real bottleneck is political. Which suggests that more smart people should go into politics.
English

@opinionatedobs7 There are lots and lots of very smart people in scientific research, medicine, and so on. You even have overlap with finance geniuses (DE Shaw’s DESRAD doing drug research). I just doubt the problem is “not enough geniuses”
English

I technically agree but there isn’t that much for our smartest people to “do” that adds value over anything else
It might be “morally” better for more of our smartest people to be cancer researchers, but it won’t cure cancer any faster. We have plenty of smart ppl there already
Paul Novosad@paulnovosad
One of the worst things we do as a society is take a big chunk of our smartest people and socialize them into thinking that getting rich is the only thing that matters. What a waste of talent.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings They could always go back if the quality of life was not what they expected. For the most part they don't.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings They are strivers. That's a good thing. It's good to want a better life for yourself and your family.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Do you think Chinese factory workers are moving here lol? We just let in unskilled labor? It's middle class or higher who want to make it. They're strivers otherwise they would have stayed home.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Chinese immigrants move to places with more capitalists because even though they themselves are unlikely to become billionaire, they can still obtain a better standard of living by working for one.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Chinese Americans don't own many of those either. Have you ever met a real person in the real world?
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Wealth can also buy governments, universities, all the media, private militaries. Do you think that might be a problem in a supposed democracy?
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings In all of human history, exactly zero Chinese immigrants to the US have had a rape island, or attempted to start one.
It's interesting that you have no conception of wealth beyond rape islands. You should look around. There are lots of nice things that money can buy.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings I'm sure the spies are nice people. I'm talking about the strivers. You can't own a rape island in China. They execute you if you try. In America, you can dream.

English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings I don't think Chinese immigrants to the US are pedophiles. I know many, they are mostly wonderful people.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings The world is full of pedophiles who wish to be the next Epstein, and America is their promised land.
English

@TheObtuseBruce @naaycoqui They started out with the thesis that taking money from AIPAC drives pro-Israel voting. They are now implicitly admitting that their original thesis was wrong.
English

@naaycoqui Why are people so mad at AIPAC tracker? Are those candidates upset that they are labeled as Pro-Israel? If they want to vote for Pro-Israel policies, their constituents should know about it no?
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Net migration from China to the US remains extremely positive to this day. The people moving must not have heard your cherrypicked stats.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Weird that human beings move from China to the US way more frequently than the other way around. You would think they would want to live in the country that was better in the ways that matter to them...
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings "Rich" and "middle income" are precisely the categories being questioned. China is richer than us in any metric that actually matters to human beings.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings The US is exceptional among rich countries for its high infant mortality. China is exceptional among middle income countries for its high literacy. You can cherry pick these 2 data points, or you could look at trends across a wide number of countries.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings These are the numbers that measure the well-being of a population, not those I "like." Capitalism isn't interested in that one bit, so it measures GDP. You can increase GDP by bombing a whole in the ground and filling it. It measures nothing about society.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings The US and China have the same life expectancy. There is a big difference between taking a serious look at a question and cherry-picking the numbers you like.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings What's to understand about life expectancy bro? They live longer in China. Fewer of their infants die. More people know how to read. More people are housed.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings This is another situation where a STEM skillset could help you. Malnutrition in the US is not driven by people who can't afford food. It's driven by the elderly who have trouble eating.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings The capitalism number says we're rich. The entire economy is just a big casino for tech demons and people are dying of hunger, but GDP measures how wealthy we all are as a nation.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings I think if you were a STEM kid you would have the skillset necessary to actually understand the statistics you're throwing around.
The US does not have net emigration, but you might have been confused by the falling net immigration driven largely by immigration enforcement.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings What the fuck is the point of "wealth" if half the population can't read? Buy rape islands for billionaire pedophiles?
US has net emigration now. Keep up.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings None of those are measure of wealth. The US does better by any measure of income or wealth.
A good rule of thumb is which direction has higher migration.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings What's "rich"? The PRC has a better life expectancy, infant mortality, literacy and housing rate than the US.
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings I mean looking at data, noticing which countries are rich and which are not, and evaluating hypotheses about why that may be.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings What do you mean by "observational skills"? You've not actually observed any Marxist society. You were told stories about them.
What is it for a political economy to "work"?
English

@grain99806254 @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings I've read the communist manifesto and wasn't impressed. I'm just standing up for the rights of others to use their observational skills to notice that marxism doesn't work without reading theory themselves.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @PedanticKilljoy @NihilNothings Notice how you've been trained for this incurious scoffing. You didn't come up with that line and you didn't read Marx. You just let people with status tell you how to think.
English

@dlhtks2 You don't have to hate someone just because you disagree about politics.
English

@lemmingstribes @mistersiisall I think this is true. But I don't think the false belief in an object having an intrensic value is caused by capitalist theory, or capitalism itself. It predates both. And it still existed in communist societies.
Capitalist theory equally rejects the idea for similar reasons.
English

@I_am_not_a_lib @mistersiisall The "fetishism" part of commodity fetishism is chosen for the religious connotations, as the belief that souls or supernatural forces can be found in (particularly man-made) objects mirrors this belief that (particularly man-made) objects possess a "price" or "value".
English

1, Marx is a critic of LTV.
2, his criticism is not of supply/demand, but of the way the bourgeois logic of an invisible hand abstracts commodities and imbues them with supernatural characteristics.
3, Marx is concerned with the relationship between people, not commodities.

@zriboua This is a great takedown of third worldism, but with zero evidence that Zohran himself is a third worldist. What has he said that makes you think he sees the world this way?
English

Mamdani’s speeches evoke that same architecture of thought. His convictions echo the Algerian Revolution’s core belief that the oppressed occupy history’s moral vanguard and that their liberation redeems human dignity.
Mamdani repurposes the lexicon of Third-World liberation for American soil, transforming decolonization into a scaffold for moral and political identity.
