The smart folks @PPICNotes do tell the story and it’s not just housing. Under your watch, San Jose got higher city taxes, rising crime, and slower basics in return. Families don’t flee just because rent is high they leave when public safety declines and City Hall keeps reaching deeper into their wallets. Fewer residents = fewer taxpayers = a shrinking base you keep trying to tax harder. That’s not leadership, @MattMahan it’s a doom loop.

The smart folks @PPICNotes tell the story. High housing costs are driving families out of California, and when they go, they take their good ideas, their tax dollars, and sometimes even their job-generating businesses.

Matt Mahan keeps saying San Jose “said yes” to housing but that’s a half-truth at best. What actually happened is the city waived or deferred fees that were supposed to pay for infrastructure, schools, parks, and public safety. That didn’t make housing cheaper it shifted the cost from developers onto taxpayers. San Jose didn’t “unlock” 2,000 homes. It subsidized developers with hundreds of millions in public value and working families are still waiting for relief.

San Jose said “yes” to every project that came before the council. But our fees, which looked good on paper but were rarely collected, effectively told homebuilders “no.” When we reduced them, we unlocked 2,000 new homes. We need to do the same across the state — reduce high fees, slow approval processes, lawsuits, high construction costs, and more. ternercenter.berkeley.edu/blog/assessing…

@MattMahanHQ This is spin, @MattMahanSJ. In San José, housing costs $500–$800+ per sq ft to build $700k–$1M per unit before land or profit. City fees, prevailing wage, CEQA lawsuits, and delays kill projects. Streamlining paperwork doesn’t fix math this broken.

To build more housing, we need to lower the cost of building new homes–reduce fees, lower the cost of capital, speed up permitting, and streamline regulations. We’re already doing it in San Jose. We can do it for every Californian.
