To enhance connectivity and open the Lamu Port–South Sudan–Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor to trade, the Kenya Ports Authority, in collaboration with the leadership of Turkana and Marsabit county Governments, has initiated plans for the establishment of the proposed two key infrastructure development, Moyale Dry Port and the introduction of ferry services on Lake Turkana. KPA Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William Ruto, together with Marsabit Governor Mahmod Mohamed , assessed the proposed sites for the construction of the dry port and a modern jetty for both cargo and passenger services. Speaking at the proposed site in Loiyangalani, Marsabit County, Capt. Ruto stated that the planned establishment of the dry Port and the ferry services to operate on Lake Turkana is largely part of the country's vision to spur economic growth and build trade links connecting Kenya and Ethiopia and Southern Sudan under the LAPPSET Corridor project. “What we are planning is part of the nation's vision to develop not only urban centres along the Lappset but also largely broader initiatives to accelerate economic integration across the region, ’he noted . On his part, the Marsabit county governor, H.E Mohamud Mohamed, praised the government and His excellency the President William Ruto for his foresight in prioritising development in the north-eastern region. The Governor also lauded the Kenya Ports Authority for fast-tracking the proposed project ,noting that it will boost the economic development for both Marsabit and Turkana counties once the operationalisation of the ferry services commences on Lake Turkana. During the tour of the region, the CEO was accompanied by the GM Infrastructure development , Eng. Mathews Amuti, Manager corporate planning and strategy , Mr Mohamed Golicha; and Manager Ferry operations , Mr Paul Koech.
