Excavations at Sitagarha located at Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, were carried out over three seasons from 2019–22. The main objective of the excavation was to identify the nature of the site through recovered antiquarian remains and to understand the cultural succession of the region by documenting structural and material evidence.
The excavations revealed important structural remains including shrines, monastic features and habitation deposits. The shrine consisted of a main chamber with two side chambers and circumambulatory pathways, indicating that it formed part of a Buddhist monastic complex, where five monastic chambers were exposed.
Significant sculptures recovered from the site include images of Buddha in Bhumisparsha-mudra, Tara, and Avalokitesvara, along with architectural fragments, decorated bricks, Ghant-kuta, and inscribed pieces. Other antiquities such as beads, sling balls, hopscotch pieces, iron nails and arrowheads were also found. Based on typological evidence and an inscribed broken slab, the site has been dated to approximately 9th–11th century C.E, indicating the presence of Vajrayan Buddhist settlement in the region.
