The internet used to be fun. It used to be helpful. I don’t think that’s true anymore. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to let my children have access to the internet like i did when I was a kid. As someone that has grown up in every corner of the web, it’s probably at the worst state I can remember it being. I grew up on IIRC chat rooms, yahoo games and have had marketing agencies for SEO, Google ads, Facebook ads and was an early user of most social media platforms. Now it’s biased search results, doomscrolling designed in a never ending dopamine loop for your brain, AI slop, algorithmic clickbait designed to divide, ads on every other post pushing retail consumerism down your throat, predators lurking on instagram, Roblox and discord and the internet overall just feels unhelpful and depressing. I only see it getting worse tbh. As time goes on, the more i am reverting to board games and books and considering doing away with all tv’s and computers. It’s a crazy thing to say, but the rampant anxiety and depression in kids tells me that it’s the right move.
