Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s think about this for a minute. There is a prostitute in a (quite literally) God-forsaken city that is about to be supernaturally destroyed by an invading army. The prostitute, however, can observe that the God who is with the invaders is stronger than the god of her own city, because as a result of what she has seen and heard, she can tell that he “is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” To escape the coming destruction, she strikes a deal with foreign spies that she knows are spies, BARGAINING WITH THEIR LIVES to make sure that she and her family make it out alive. Now, I actually like this story, because it shows just how REAL the stories and histories of the Bible are. That is a totally believable that a prostitute can see which way the wind blows in a coming conflict. It is totally understandable that her “faith” (if it is right to call it that) is totally based on the demonstration of strength that she has actually seen and directly heard about in her then-present political situation. It is totally understandable that she would bargain with life-and-death to watch out for herself and her family. But don’t be an idiot and think that picking the winning side this makes “Rahab the Prostitute” good marriage material for your son.

And I also know the idea that we evangelicals usually have in mind when we say “faith” is not exactly what the Bible means when it says “faith.” That’s what I meant by that side-comment. But don’t change the subject: No sane man would RECOMMEND (not “allow” but “recommend”) his son to marry a prostitute who is only alive because she successfully bargained her way out of a 1400 BC siege by bargaining with the lives of spies after she recognized that the LORD God was more powerful than the lower-case-g-god, based on the military and divine acts that she was almost an eye-witness of.
