RAT & molecular test stats = compared to “gold standard” PCR - which perform much worse than we think PCR sensitivity ~80%: "best-case" - real-world likely different Sensitivity & specificity like "miles per gallon" sticker 🙄 @michaelmina_lab: Thoughts? medpagetoday.com/special-report…

@NukitToBeSure If I’m able to get these, hopefully I’ll find a way to give my current torches to someone who needs them and can’t afford them. I’m not sure how, but that just makes so much sense for those of us who are upgrading from devices that are still usable.

Each Torch 2 will come with the single unit carrying case on the right, but if you buy two, you also get the twin carrying case on the left. Both cases come with a shoulder strap.

@LadyChuan The problem with multiplex tests: different viruses have different incubation periods & reach peak loads at different times, a problem with RATs but not Metrix

Could we be seeing a repeat of 2020 where more people are dying in the Acute Phase vs. Chronic Phase of illness? I’m seeing more posts of deaths after a “short illness. I’m also seeing postings of people who took Covid tests after a week of illness posting positive tests for BOTH Covid and Flu, whereas those who test early within the first 3 days of symptoms only showing a positive result of Flu only. 🤔 Very thankful for those who have continued to Mask throughout this entire pandemic!

@ghhughes While Democrats use mail-in voting at a higher rate nationally (largely driven by urban & suburban users), rural voters who will lose their "postmark cushion" due to distance from processing centers are overwhelmingly Republicans & older Independents.

@LadyChuan I just asked someone I know well there who got a big promotion to consider teaching students and staff about masking, pollution as a factor in many medical conditions so HEPA is key & aerosolized viruses. Don’t know that it will go anywhere, but gave it a shot.

“It Feels like Everyone is sick” because they are indeed sick. There is presently a Covid/Flu outbreak at NYU Hospital. There are departments within the hospital who are face-forwarding with patients who now have to wear an N95. Imagine where we would be if this could have been standard practice. Outbreaks would be non-existent.

@bryan_kirschner @winthrop317 They should be pointed down 45 degrees, I believe. She has an article linked to a recent post. She also says that positioning of HEPA is irrelevant. There was a paper from one of the reliable IAQ sites that said as long as you have ~7” in front, you’re fine.

@winthrop317 If I did it again I would probably space them equidistant & end to end. Getting them & power up there took longer than expected but we had cracked cracked windows on the opposite wall & a HEPA mid-room so I wasn't too worried about less than perfect spacing

@NukitToBeSure Found it! Thanks! And if/when I get these, I hope to find folks I can give my Torches to. Lots of people who really need them can’t afford them. Lighter ones will be So much better for someone my age.

A neat trick is that the Torch 2 has twice the total radiant power output as one Lantern- but the ACGIH Minimum Continuous Exposure Distance is just 36 cm (14.2 in), so it's extremely safe and perfect for tabletop or automotive use. (Can't wait to see who gets funding and credit for recreating our work on this without attribution).
Nukit@NukitToBeSure

Sure, the ACGIH Minimum Continuous-Exposure Distance for the Lantern is 68cm. The recommended mounting height is 2.5m, tilted downward at a 45º angle. To exceed that, you would need a very tall person to stand and stare directly up at it for almost eight hours. If you have a lower ceiling, you can substitute horizontal distance for vertical- put them over a dresser or TV, anything that makes standing under them with your eyes closer than 68cm difficult.

We've reached a new level of medical appt hell, where if you tell the dr you don't consent to them taking AI notes on the conversation you get called anxious and all your symptoms brushed off for the rest of the appt.

@tortythegreat99 @wonderartsy That’s the part everyone misses about AI errors - how many humans make. I saw a top ortho who didn’t have my initial complaint recorded, so, at 2nd appt, he said no surgery yet & get a 2nd opinion. I did, but now have to wait 4 months for it.

Post COVID Exposure actions What possible mitigation could you take if you think you might have gotten exposed to someone sick with Covid? Is there any prophylaxis, nasal spray / rinse, any action you’d take? Any tips would help. ❤️✊

@drseanmullen I mask but azelastine has solid antiviral data - plan to use it if I get a respiratory infection or am exposed - NOT as preventative. Helpful if someone has TH1/TH2 immune imbalance due to allergies bc approved as antihistamine in 1980s

This paper is from 2024. Nasal sprays are still the least scientific thing I do. That & taking breaks from bourbon, scotch & beer. Sure, they provide a modicum of benefit. Just not the kind of benefit that wearing an N95 or a well-ventilated room provides. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39004091/
Brandon Luu, MD@BrandonLuuMD

Nasal sprays can speed up recovery from respiratory infections, possibly by reducing viral load in the nose. In an RCT of 13,799 high-risk adults: 18% reduction in illness duration (6.5 vs 8.2 days) 35% less antibiotic use

Zhou Liang's mask
Zhou Liang's mask@zhouliang_mask·
Currently, there are four main ways to connect the mask body and the straps: 1. Connecting the straps with plastic parts welded to the mask. This allows for easy replacement of ear loops or headbands. The disadvantage is that the protruding strap length affects the appearance. 2. Fixing the straps to the mask with metal nails. The disadvantage is that the protruding straps affect the appearance, and the inner edge of the metal nails may have rough edges. 3. Passing the straps through a fold in the mask or a special structure. This structure is usually difficult to make very wide, resulting in a smaller distance between stress points, requiring greater tensile strength for a tight seal. 4. Welding the straps to the mask using ultrasonic welding. The disadvantage is weaker reverse tensile strength. Which connection method do you prefer?

It is already possible to do fit testing with off-the-shelf components. But the total cost of components can be expensive. These kits contain two nebulizers and threshold check and fit test solutions. So when you can get all of that for $35 it's cheaper than buying equivalent components separately.

OSHA-grade mask fit testing kits for $35 on eBay. If you've ever wanted to see if your N95, KN95 or other masks fit you this is a great price for a full OSHA compliant mask fit testing kit. It uses old-school squeeze bulb nebulizers to mist a saccharin liquid. If your mask doesn't fit well you'll taste the saccharin. It comes with two squeeze bulb nebulizers and two strengths of saccharin solution so that you can test how many sprays it takes to taste the saccharin without a mask as a baseline, and then you use the more concentrated solution to see if you can taste it while wearing a mask using the same number of sprays. ebay.com/itm/2264443229… I have one of these fit test kits, but I got it from a different seller. I can't vouch specifically for the seller. 5 kits available as of Dec 5, 2025. Subject to change.
