@mloehrer @TimePreference_ You're ok with countries we do business with having a lower standard of living? That's super ethical of you. We don't have to make everything. Some countries are better for certain things, and trade creates more of both. We do have to protect what we're good at though.

Consider a. way more americans are consumers than are manufacturers, b. many US manufacturers use foreign inputs to make their goods, and c. we shouldn't WANT to make everything

tariffs don't protect domestic industry they protect inefficient producers at the expense of consumers every tariff is a tax on your purchasing power to subsidize businesses that can't compete

@NotMagaior @TimePreference_ This is a sound money issue. Every US dollar represents debt to the federal reserve. It was loaned into existence, with interest. The best part, the money to pay the interest doesn't exist because they never printed it. Although, they will take your property for it. End the fed

You're defending American workers by allowing competition to bring relative prices down. Your ideals are retrograde and incorrect.

@NotMagaior @TimePreference_ If wages were going up at the same rate. I can tell you from personal experience, that isn't happening. Eventually it is cheaper to make it overseas and ship it here, than to make it here and keep up with inflation. Wages are kept low by cheap, third world labor.

@IknowNothing83 @TimePreference_ Inflation isn't a problem. What matters—and all that matters—is relative prices. How many baskets can a worker earning median wages buy? You'll find that that number has been going up with time. The unit of money losing value doesn't have any negative effects in principle-

@NotMagaior @TimePreference_ In my lifetime, inflation has never gone down. The rate that money is inflating changes, but every year that money losses value. I think defending American workers against foreign adversaries is a winning strategy.

@mloehrer @TimePreference_ If you're trading with countries that use cheap labor, pay the tax. I'm all for free trade, as long as it goes both ways, with countries that don't have slave camps and pay their workers comparable wages.

@IknowNothing83 @TimePreference_ It seems like the ones who benefit from tariffs the most are the people with political connections, it's small businesses who rely on trade—yes, even with foreign countries—who suffer while lobbyists and cronies get fat. What do you say to businesses who rely on global trade?

@mloehrer @TimePreference_ With tariffs erasing the benefits of slave labor, companies would move their manufacturing back to America to avoid shipping costs. Then we'd be in a position to stop doing business with those countries until they agree to respect the basic human rights of their citizens.

@mloehrer @TimePreference_ We have become dependent on those countries. Completely ending trade with them right now is impossible. Tariffs are too protect the American worker, the money should be used to fund the navy. I live in the world as it is, not as I would like it to be.

The Afroman Trial. -Cops raid Afromans house for bullshit reasons. -Steal money, break his door, fuck his house up. -No criminality found whatsoever, no charges at all pressed on Afroman. -Afroman spends the next 3 years making songs that make fun of all the officers involved by name, even using footage of the raid from his own CCTV cameras. -Songs had titles like "Randy Walters is a son of a bitch" and "Lick Em Low Lisa" accusing one of the officers of being a lesbian and sleeping with the other officers wives. -During the raid one officer looked like he was about to eat some lemon pound cake sitting on Afromans counter, Afroman made a whole album calling the officer fat. -The cops get mad and file a lawsuit for defamation. -Afroman turns up to court in a whole American flag suit. -Officers performatively mald and cry while listening to the songs really trying to oversell how badly the songs upset them. -One officer was suing because Afroman made a whole song about him saying he was fucking the officers wife. When the officer was asked if Afroman was really fucking his wife, he said "I don't know". Nuking his own case and establishing that there is a non-zero chance that Afroman might actually be fucking his wife. -As his only witness for the trial, Afroman brought a deputies EX FUCKING WIFE. -The jury ruled completely in favour of Afroman. This entire thing has been a great win for free speech and absolutely fucking hilarious.
