I'm curious, I wonder how many government MPs have private health insurance for themselves and their families. I have this theory that a government would be less concerned about cutting funding to health if their families are protected by private health insurance.

Wish NZ gov would help grow businesses that create/provide high value goods & services for export, so can provide well paying jobs. Give them tax breaks, interest free loans & grants for R&D so they can grow quicker. We can do better than exporting low value primary products.

Just seen a paywalled story in the Herald Sun Victoria that stop sign workers and labourers will soon earn $120k a yr under a new union pay deal. My former flatmate graduated as an Occupational Therapist but worked as a Labourer as it paid more...

@southstarbrew True. I'm talking very broadly, but maybe its the people I interact with.

@Ilikelookingat Perhaps but alot of people work for both through their careers.

From talking to colleagues, family & friends over the years, I get the impression that broadly speaking, people working in government dont have a high opinion of people working in the private sector, and people in the private sector have a low opinion of government workers.

I'm not sure what to say about this account. Twitter provides for all audiences.

@Ilikelookingat I remember swimming at Freemantle with helicopters going up and down shark spotting.

Is this an only in Australia thing....you need to have this type of service because of the shark risk.

@meawnz My interpretation is that coastal shipping just carries cargo, so no roll on roll off of trucks etc.

Just read in a March Stuff article that less than 4% of our domestic freight in NZ is carried by coastal shipping. Quite surprised by that. It's 17% in Australia.

@Ilikelookingat I heard an RNZ interviewee say it is cheaper to buy grain from Australia and ship it to the North Island than buy South Island wheat and ship it from there.

@Kiwipally Yeah we are single income as well. Seems like many things are going up higher than the inflation rate (to me anyway).

@Ilikelookingat All our bills are rising so fast as well. We're on a fixed income as only my partner can work. His pay raise last year was not even close to covering all these expense increases.

Just got our home insurance bill, its risen by 33.1% from last years premium. Unfortunately I didnt get a pay rise of 33% this year.....

Got a lower quote from elsewhere, so called my current insurance provider, and what do you know, they can offer a cheaper premium:)

Got some quotes for comparison. One large insurance provider wouldnt even give me a quote. Risk of inundation, a creek is 1 km away. Wondering if insurance companies risk appetite is getting less & less as they better understand risk & with impacts of climate change.
