I read a lot of very nasty comments about America’s First Lady, Melania Trump. I mean, horrific insults. I’m not delving into that. Melania had a massive task organising the state visit, an historical occasion which had the global media waiting to pounce! (I saw a post criticising that a fork was too close to the plate!) However, they were left wanting! Melania and her team delivered an occasion she and the US can be extremely proud of. Every minute of the visit considered the kings interests, and I’m convinced the state dinner had a thoughtful approach to Charles’ dietary needs. It was beautifully healthy. The table setting was magnificent. Melania’s state dinner dress was perfect. For what it’s worth, that’s my twopence worth.

Trump just sent a letter to Congress saying the war in Iran is “terminated” because today marks 60 days and in order for the President to have the authority to continue, the Constitution requires a vote from Congress. But the war is not really terminated. Trump is just restarting the clock to avoid a vote from Congress that may limit his power to wage a war on Iran, and the war is absolutely not over just because there has been a ceasefire. Also, Trump is about to start military actions again very soon. It never ended. This is unconstitutional and Congress should reclaim it’s constitutional authority.

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach. The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.
