Another week, another horrifying “error” by the BBC. After a reader pointed out that the BBC hadn’t capitalized “the Holocaust” in an article about Holocaust survivors, the network responded that “there have been other holocausts.” But there haven’t. The Holocaust gets capitalized because it refers to a specific event, an industrial scale genocide of Jews. The BBC later backtracked, corrected the error, and issued an apology. But when mistakes happen this often, apologies are no longer sufficient. And when they are this disrespectful, interviewing Holocaust survivors is no longer appropriate. Britain’s public broadcaster does not have the expertise to respectfully highlight the stories of Holocaust survivors. This has got to change.
