Alexander I died #OTD in 1124. It's said that in 1123 he was forced to shelter from a storm on Inchcolm, in the the Firth of Forth. He vowed to build a monastery on the island as thanks for his salvation. David I carried out his brother's wish. Have you visited Inchcolm Abbey?

‼𝗛𝗢𝗚𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘‼ We're seeing some similarities between Heysham, a couple of the @GovanStones ones, and the Inchcolm example. #Viking-Age beauty! #MedievalTwitter Thanks, @Gilbertsally (h/t @AS_Corpus) and @HistEnvScot, @welovehistory (sketchfab.com/3d-models/hogb…)

Also squeezed in a visit to St Peter’s Church, Heysham, with #earlymedieval a delicious hogback and part of a cross shaft. @AS_Corpus

Inchcolm Abbey, Firth of Forth (Scotland) @CJMorrison65 image & reconstruction mock-up. An Augustinian House the 'Iona of the East'. It was raided several times by English ships in the 1300s and during the Rough Wooing Wars in the 1540s. #IncholmAbbey #HistoryRebuilt

Props to David I on #BrothersDay for honouring his deceased brother by building Inchcolm Abbey. In 1123 Alexander I sheltered on Inchcolm during a storm. He promised to build a monastery in thanks but he died the next year. David became king & carried out his brother's wish.

Active from 1880 to 1977, the Firth of Forth's great naval fortress was once "the most powerful in the British Empire". Through archival sources, fieldwork and oral accounts discover the story of the defences, and the people stationed there, in our ebook: bit.ly/33ujmbf
