* the 2029 first would be valuable. first round picks are always valuable, but i would bet money that’s closer to 30 than a lottery pick.

* mathurin would have re-signed. i’m not sure he would have, given he wanted to be a starter and he didn’t fit the pacers style of play.
* ijax was an asset for the pacers. he’s an undersized center coming off an achilles rupture who relies on athleticism.

I'm really sorry to all our fans. I own taking this risk. Surprised it came up 5th after this year. I thought we were due some luck. But please remember - this team deserved a starting center to compete with the best teams next year. We have always been resilient.

The Pacers move was always gonna be judged based on a coin flip. If it went their way, it'd be a genius win-win. If it didn't, it'd be seen as reckless.
It did not go their way, which hurts! But I don't think it's a disaster. Zu really strengthens them as contenders right now.

I really don’t understand the panic. Today, the best scenario would’ve been keeping the pick.
But if you asked in January, having Ivica Zubac is better than losing Mathurin and replacing him with Keaton Wagler and no legitimate center.

the trade for Zubac now becomes highly questionable. He needs to max out by developing a perimeter shot and becoming a three-point threat. Needs to be able to contribute in every way possible.

This is still a very good team. Mathurin wasn’t going to be on this team anymore anyway, and they turned him into a very good center, that they needed, in Zubac. They’ll have flexibility to add more depth. Still, what a series of gut punches this last year has been.

5th isn’t 7th. I would have lost my mind if they got Zubac AND the #1. But this trade goes from one of the greatest moves ever (if they got #1) to a mere solid move — a move that I still like. Zubac was made in a lab to play with Hali, a huge change from Turner.

If the Pacers waited till the offseason, lost Mathurin to free agency, and fell to 7th in the draft, I think trading that pick & 2029 for Zubac would be an easy call. They essentially found a creative way to execute that move now. Smart move.
