You'd be amazed at the lengths a selfish basketball player will travel to manipulate stats such as points, rebounds, even assists -- regardless if they help a team win.
Can't do that with plus/minus.
Maybe we should take that stat a little more seriously?

Best players I've been around all never had to be told to get in the gym, or get up shots.
They did it on their own. And would try to bring others with them.

Silver Anniversary Saturday | Greg Tonagel Greg Tonagel of LaPorte High School was a 1998 Indiana All-Star who led the Slicers to an 18-8 record his senior season, averaging 21.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.5 APG, and 2.3 SPG. After high school he led Valparaiso University to 4 NCAA tournament appearances and 4 Conference Championships as a player. He was employed as the Valparaiso Director of Basketball Operations before becoming Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Indiana Wesleyan University in 2005, where he has been a 3x NAIA National Championship Head Coach and 3x National Coach of the Year.
