This post resonates with me. I’m a man of mostly Indigenous descent from Peru, raised in the Midwest, and I ended up 6’2 while the average height back in Peru is much lower, around 5’5. To me, that says a lot about the role nutrition and living conditions can play. I hope one day more people in Peru have better access to nutritious food and healthier conditions too.

In the mid-1800s, the average Dutch man was 5'4". Shorter than the average American. Shorter than most of their European neighbours. Today the average Dutch man is 6'0". The tallest national population on earth. That is a 20-centimetre transformation in about 150 years. One of the fastest documented height increases in human history. What drove it? Researchers are consistent: dairy. Meat. High-quality animal protein at scale, democratised across the population as prosperity spread. The Netherlands is a dairy farming country. It always was. What changed was that ordinary people, not just the wealthy, could access what the land produced. The Dutch didn't get taller because of a new crop. They got taller because of a cow.

There are several reasons for this. There were never that many Spaniards in Peru, and during the colonial period most were concentrated in Lima. Indigenous populations also were not reduced to the same extent as in some other parts of the Americas, and the population has remained large into the present time.

@IndigenousPod21 Yeah also Peruvian, grew up in the northeast and I’m 5’11. People think it’s a short gene but iirc it only reduces height by like 2cm and height is polygenic anyway. It’s widespread malnutrition sadly.
Some of these new kids are big af. My nephew is tall as me he’s only 13 lol

The Purepecha did have the most bronze/copper production in the region, and the relacion de michoacan does claim they had metal weapons, but we don't how common such weapons were. Most likely most Purepecha weapons were wood/stone like Mexica ones
The reason the Purepecha won against Mexica forces is usually credited to smart use of terrain combined with bows, alongside perhaps their more centralized imperial political structure
