By continuing to call both breast milk and formula “foods” or sources of “nutrition,” we diminish the profound biological reality of breastfeeding and artificially elevate a highly processed caloric replacement to an undeserved status of normalcy and equivalence. @US_FDA please require health risk warnings for mothers and babies on formula packaging. Families deserve to make informed choices. Informed choice is choice.

When a formula company makes any comparison to breastmilk, it presupposes that a meaningful and appropriate comparison is possible. It is not. Breastmilk's bioactive complexity cannot be replicated through current manufacturing, if ever. @US_FDA don't let the formula industry fool parents with deceptive marketing.

The Australian government must act to protect #breastfeeding from exploitative advertising of all baby milk formula products. They’ve sat on their hands for 2 decades despite consumer alarm & expert advice exposing millions of kids to health risk. #auspol theconversation.com/australia-may-…

Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) 🍟 now dominate the global #food supply and are strongly associated with risks for heart disease, cancers, metabolic disease, #obesity and diabetes. Recent review demonstrates that UPFs are engineered to heighten reward and accelerate delivery of reinforcing ingredients, driving compulsive consumption and disrupting appetite regulation. UPFs share key engineering strategies adopted from the #tobacco industry, such as dose optimization and hedonic manipulation. Policy tools that helped reduce tobacco-related harm, including restrictions on child-targeted marketing, #taxes, improved labeling, limits on availability in schools and hospitals, and litigation, should be adapted to address the public-#health threat posed by UPFs. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/14…

For decades, the commercial milk formula (CMF) industry has used underhand marketing strategies, designed to prey on parents' fears and concerns at a vulnerable time, to turn the feeding of young children into a multibillion-dollar business. The immense economic power accrued by CMF manufacturers is deployed politically to ensure the industry is under-regulated and services supporting breastfeeding are under-resourced. These are the stark findings of the 2023 Breastfeeding Series, published in The Lancet.

The aim of the infant formula industry is to shut every woman's milk supply down. If they don't do that, they have no market. Their aim is to create dependency on formula by getting mom to use formula which decreases her own milk supply. @FTC please require dependency warnings on formula.

Calley Means says food companies are deliberately adding chemicals to make their products addictive. “It’s said by CEOs of food companies on earnings calls, ‘These chemicals are added to make food addictive.’” “They say that and brag about it on earnings calls.” “That is the stated strategy of food companies, and the FDA has been asleep at the wheel until now.” @calleymeans

Today was the day I finally accepted that I have ADHD. The impatience, constant sense of urgency, interrupting sentences, distractibility, forgetting names, struggling to read through a book, being awful with tasks, coming up with more ideas than I can finish, and the ruthless pursuit of efficiency. My counselling session opened my eyes - these traits have been lifelong, they shape who I am, and I’m grateful to everyone who has tolerated me along the way. I see it not as a disorder, but a personality trait that is common in high-achieving professions and one that needs to be tamed. I asked my wife whether she thought I could have ADHD, and she said she knew about it since day one 😭

Here’s what’s happened: three formula companies, Nestlé, Danone and Lactalis have found a toxin called cereulide in their formula - it stops the body’s cells being able to make energy and it’s not destroyed by cooking/heat. bmj.com/content/392/bm…

@MaritKolby Yet we continue to experiment with premature infants and UPF. We also have not moved to reduce the use of UPF for all infants. The evidence is clear UPF has a negative impact on health. Infant formula is UPF category 4

Adults who consumed the highest amounts of ultra processed foods .. 47% increased RR of CVD. "Large scale randomized trials are needed"? Given what we now know about ultra-processed dietary patterns, would such trials even receive ethical approval? pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41587677/

Instead of: “What about women who can’t breastfeed?” We should be asking: Why do so many women believe they can’t? How many cases of ‘failure’ are actually preventable? What systems are undermining lactation before it has a chance to succeed? Why are women not receiving real diagnoses for supply issues? These questions don’t shame women. They respect women’s capacity.

Worth noting: French authorities are investigating unconfirmed links to the deaths of two infants. Of course the companies will deny such links but entirely reasonable of the mother in this story to demand further investigation of cases #breastfeeding share.google/ukn5IpnuejSrLM…

Hot off the press! 🔥 Our new BMJ piece shows how the focus on “healthy” UPFs—promoted by industry and nutrient-centric academics—inflates benefits, legitimizes industry narratives, and distracts from the real priority: cutting overall UPF consumption. bmj.com/content/392/bm…
