Downing Street say they do not recognise the Scottish FM’s interpretation of the phone call. “The PM committed to meeting to discussed shared issues including the cost of living.  “As the PM told the First Minister, the manifesto this government was elected  on was unambiguous that ‘Labour does not support independence or another referendum’. “Our position remains unchanged.”
Peter A Smith@PeterAdamSmith

🚨 Scottish FM & UK PM to hold face to face talks. Scottish First Minister’s office says the UK Prime Minister just called to congratulate him on his victory, adding “It is particularly welcome the Prime Minister agreed to meet next month to discuss a referendum on independence”

'John Swinney's decision is little more than an infantile gesture to appease the cultural extremists in his own party and in the Scottish Greens' 👇

No reason why Andy Burnham can’t be the Labour candidate in the forthcoming Aberdeen South by-election. Courage, comrades!

@afneil Why is vote share never an issue in UK GEs when recognising majorities & mandates? Double standard democracy.

Ok. Let’s do that. SNP + Greens took 49% of the vote and 72 MSPs between them in 2021. On Thursday their combined share of vote was 41% but they ended up with one more MSP between them — 73. So combined share of vote down 8 percentage points. Hardly momentum for independence. And it’s share of the vote that matters in a referendum. Nor does one more MSP for independence change anything. There was a majority of MSPs for independence before Thursday. Much good did it do them. So what’s new? Nor does anyone seriously think combining Green and SNP MSPs a serious basis for claiming independence. Even Nicola Sturgeon acknowledged it wasn’t. Even more so now — the Green manifesto for Thursday did not include independence. So it’s no mandate for independence.
Martin Campbell Kaney@xaorsa_online

@afneil You have to include the Greens and other Independence parties in the momentum. You cannot just look at the SNP.

@GrahamGGrant Thanks for clearly articulating the steady decline of the UK, a perfect argument for Scottish independence.

The new #indyref2 trigger is the prospect of Reform running the U.K. Government. Add it to a long list - Tory majority, Brexit, Boris. Is anyone still buying this bilge? Presumably even hardcore believers privately concede independence is dead.

@BrianLeishmanMP Read your column in the Sunday Mail today. Do you ever consider the potential for a Scottish Labour Party in an independent Scotland?

@LesleyRiddoch An SNP self inflicted 'fail'. While I understand the precedent argument, trying to repeat a single party majority result, which was an anomaly, was a spectacular own goal. No majority will now replace 'once in a generation'.

@paulhutcheon He put himself front and centre of the campaign. He also kept the 2024 Labour UK GE mantra of 'Change'. He has to take personal & decision making responsibility.

Anas Sarwar never stood a chance in the Holyrood election as he was judged in relation to Keir Starmer. This defeat should raise profound questions about the link between Scottish and UK Labour.

What's John Swinney's take on the Scottish Labour/Reform saga? Well, I asked three times whether he believes Anas Sarwar or Malcolm Offord - but I didn't get an answer.

I’ve been saying it for months, this a group of players sliding towards relegation. They either aren’t good enough, don’t care enough or both. Pathetic on the park and pathetic recruitment off the park.

@southstandview1 @AberdeenFC He genuinely comes across as being delighted to be in the job. The other candidates, Horneland & Schwartz did not show that desire & would probably have just seen it as another job.

I might be in the minority but I have a lot of time for him. He joined quick as ever, he’s done great with minimal resources. He’s won a domestic cup with st mirren. He wants to be here and he has my full backing. The board is the problem, I think he’ll sort us out !
