Brazil rewrote the rules of global agriculture in a single generation. Until the 1970s, soybeans were a temperate-zone crop. The US Midwest dominated global production. Tropical regions could not grow them at scale. Then Brazil changed that. Embrapa, Brazil's national agricultural research agency, was founded in 1973. Its mission was to turn Brazil's central savanna (the Cerrado) into productive farmland. The Cerrado covers 200 million hectares, larger than Mexico. Mariangela Hungria, a microbiologist at Embrapa Soja in Londrina, Paraná, spent four decades studying soil bacteria. She discovered how to use beneficial microbes (Azospirillum brasilense and rhizobia) to let soybeans pull nitrogen directly from the air. Most Brazilian soybean farmers no longer apply chemical nitrogen fertilizer. Her inoculants are now used across 40 million hectares of Brazilian farmland. They save farmers up to $40 billion per year in input costs. Brazilian agriculture avoids over 180 million metric tons of CO2 emissions every year as a result. On October 23, 2025, Dra. Hungria received the World Food Prize at the Iowa State Capitol. She is the first Brazilian woman to win the prize. China now sources 71% of its soybeans from Brazil. China sources 21% from the United States. The market still prices Brazil as if the Cerrado were still wasteland.
