The post modern philosophers have been saying this since the 1950s. Didderat, Baudrillard and others warned of us about this decades ago and it has only accelerated with the creation of reality shows and social media. Symbolic systems remove us from the real things and replace them with symbols, avatars and clout chasing. We are so far from reality in so many ways (food, community building, friendships, marriage, etc) and the results are starting to catch up with all of us.
