When I see medicine and surgery has a big face with CLINICIANS and nurses occupying the greatest part, this is exactly what I mean. 95% of Kenyan patients have been attended to by a nurse, 75% by an CO, 30% by an MO, less than 10% by a Specialist/Consultant.

I've had many encouters with CO's, and my conclusion was, never in my life, even with an ECOG score of 5, will those fellows be allowed near me. 1. There's a patient who came with a distended non-tender abdomen. The CO magically concluded the patient had peritonitis. 2. Another gave IV Diazepam to an under five at the rate of 0.5gm per kilo. 3. A third one treated a jundiced patient with GI symptoms (Diarrhoea, Vomiting and abdominal pain) as a Bacterial Gastritis case. 4. The fourth and the most diabolical one gave an early pancreatitis patient an H. Pylori kit. The patient came few days later and needed ICU care. Note: The COs in question were all qualified. None was a student or an intern. Worse, they are the first contacts with patient. So, unless the patient is smart enough to escalate a misdiagnosis or wrong treatment, they will complicate and show up as an emergency.

Lakini Nakhumicha had serious grudges with medical doctors and pharmacists haha.
She literally doubled the salary of diploma interns and cut that of doctors by over 70%. From 206k vs. 35k to 49k net vs. 35k wueeh.
But some of our colleagues paid the ultimate price.

November Ni Stage 2, the License comes out Next year january/february.Currently, it takes you a 7.5/8yrs to become a licensed pharmacist. Ni mbayaaa. I don’t think the profession is worth it anymore.

Why would a pharmacist intern receive a call allowance of 60k yet have no actual call rota exposure, while a BSc Clinical Officer intern who is actively on call gets 8k? Is it because of title “Dr” privilege? @ptason @maroag7

I know they are different?
But going by that logic MoIs, dentist interns and pharmacist interns are paid similar amounts,does that make them similar??
Anyway I don’t want to divert from my point, but gross salary is divided into different allowances where we have different components. My point is, why aren’t allowances paid according to responsibility, workload and actual duty exposure?

It might different by your Definition but pharmacies function all through .

And what is their day-to-day reality? Sliding a plastic spatula across a triangular tray, counting out thirty little yellow pills in neat rows of five, dumping them into an amber vial, and slapping a sticker on it that says, "May cause drowsiness. Do not operate heavy machinery." The sheer psychological resilience required to possess a doctorate in molecular alchemy while spending your afternoon explaining to someone that, yes, they still have to pay their co-pay for generic laxatives, is honestly staggering.

You See pharmtechs agreeing to give you there certificates to Open a pharmacy with 10 k and think the degree might go irrelevant??Community is there only hope btw..If push comes to shove pharmacists can perform both roles well and also lend there certs for that 10k.

@ASuruni Rn each school Training pharmtechs is capped at 20 intaktes per year… we can have it reduced to like 10 to accomodate the increase in bpharm graduates.

With all the other things, pharmacists are doing how did you conclude bpharm can be made irrelevant.Underemployment of pharmacists is one of the reasons Kenya is not an ml3, we still have to Import things that we have capacity to make. Countries like Ethiopia and TZ have ml3sts.

@ASuruni Regulations Need to be strict. We need to regulate Community more and ensure no quacks are involved. Rn the quacks are many very many. It is unrealistic to have a pharmacist who has waited about 7yrs to get a license to only dispense, we can have the pharmtechs help to dispense.

@ASuruni The roles in industries keep expanding for pharmacists. For us to get to ml3 we have to tighten the enforcements in all areas pharmacy and especially community, wholesale and industry. Community is failing us with how they are run rn.

@InnerNarratives That is why am advocating for abolishment of diploma in pharmacy so that the government can employ pharmacist in order for them to get a good environment to venture into manufacturing industry!
