Personally, I'm learning Swahili and I think as an African, wherever on the continent you come from, that language is the future for a variety of reasons. That's the most important language our kids will need to speak over the next 25-40 years. I'm not wrong about this. I'm just early.

What graduate school does not teach, but your career will demand
A lot of students think success in graduate school will depend mostly on:
→ coursework
→ research
→ publications
Those things matter.
But career outcomes are also shaped by skills that rarely appear in the syllabus.
For example:
→ Networking
↳ Oopportunities often travel through people, not just applications
→ Following up
↳ Many doors open on the second message, not the first
→ Asking better questions
↳ Thoughtful questions often create stronger impressions than trying to sound impressive
→ Building visibility
↳ Good work matters, but people also need to know your work exists
→ Finding mentors outside your lab
↳ One advisor cannot give every perspective your career will need
And the data points in the same direction.
Your career will still demand that you learn how to move through a profession.
💬 Which of these skills do you think graduate students struggle with the most?
