I overdosed six times after relapsing from inpatient rehab. Supervised consumption sites are one of the reasons I’m alive today. Because of them: I recovered. I got married. My kids were born. Now I help others find recovery. Policies made in boardrooms will never understand what happens on the ground. Closing these sites won’t stop drug use. It will stop heartbeats. 💔

Doug Ford says supervised consumption sites “enable addiction.” But bars and liquor stores are fine? Btw, alcohol causes the most harm out of any drug on the planet, and the most addictions in our society. Supervised consumption sites save lives. Close them and the public becomes the consumption site.

NEW: Ontario formally announces plans to wind down provincial funding for 7 remaining supervised drug-use sites - two in Toronto, two in Ottawa and one site each in Niagara, Peterborough and London. Will be replaced with Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hub.

Bars are supervised drug consumption sites.
One is normalized because the drug is legal.
The other exists because the drug supply is toxic and people are dying.
But if you drink and still judge people who use drugs, that’s not morality.
That’s hypocrisy!

Today they pulled me over to say:
“Congrats on your documentary. I use your story when I talk to people struggling in the Downtown Eastside.”
The same system that once saw me at my worst…

Where are people supposed to go?
Supportive housing in the Granville district was never ideal, but it housed people. Now those buildings are closing while the City bans new supportive housing and neighbourhoods organize to keep units out.
If homes close, new ones must open.

It’s the drugs. Take the drugs out of california and other major cities and crime and homelessness drops 99%. How hard is it in a modern society to cut off and punish drugs vs enabling the use?
