Sad day for ICU globally. Rinaldo was an amazing researcher, mentor and friend to so manyof us.
ANZICS@anzics

Dear friends and colleagues, It is with overwhelming sadness that we share news of the death of our colleague, mentor and friend, Rinaldo Bellomo. During recent days, both he and his family have received dedicated, expert and compassionate care from some of the finest in our ICU community. We share their pain and sense of loss. Over several decades, Rinaldo has made a profound and enduring impact on ICU practice in Australia, New Zealand and around the world. As a passionate researcher he challenged conventions, championed evidence-based practice in the care of the critically ill and supported countless colleagues in their research careers. As a compassionate mentor, colleague and friend, he touched and enriched numerous lives, and will be greatly missed. His loss will affect our whole community and in due course there will be opportunities to come together to celebrate his life. This will be a difficult time for many, but we know that our memories of Rinaldo’s relentless enthusiasm, warmth, optimism and boundless energy will help us all through the weeks ahead. In lieu of flowers, Rinaldo's family would welcome donations to support his research legacy at …lth-community-fundraising.raisely.com/inmem-rinaldo-… Our sincere condolences and best wishes go out to his family, friends and colleagues. Craig Carr, on behalf of the ANZICS community

📅 ANZICS: 50 Years in 50 Days – 41 Days to Go! 📅 Do you know what the ANZICS logo represents? Officially chosen in 1984, the snake symbolizes Asclepios—the ancient Greek God of Medicine, the Southern Cross celebrates our bi-national Society, and the canopy symbolizes the lungs while paying tribute to pioneering advances in mechanical ventilation and pulmonary care. #ANZICS50Years

In 1978, ANZICS joined forces with organisations from the USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Mexico, and Israel to discuss the formation of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine. 🌍 Even in its early years, ANZICS was shaping the future of intensive care worldwide. 💡🏥 Stay tuned for more milestones in our #ANZICS50Years journey!

📅 ANZICS: 50 Years in 50 Days – 46 Days to Go 📅 The first examination for Intensive Care in the world was held by the Faculty of Anaesthetists in October 1979. The Chairman of the examination was Dr G.A. (Don) Harrison of Sydney. Later in 1989, Harrison was awarded the Australia Medal for services to anaesthetics and intensive care. “I’d like to be looked upon as someone who improved patient outcomes through teaching and education, I want my epitaph to read: He taught.” The ANZICS Liaison Committee starts important work on preparing the content of knowledge and skills necessary for an Intensive Care Specialist for presentation to the Faculty of Anaesthetists, RACS and the RACP. #ANZICS50years

2025 marks the 50th birthday of ANZICS. Over the next 50 days, we will countdown to the 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting and pay homage to the people and events that helped shape our history and contribute to the advancement of intensive care practice. For many years, ANZICS was the only representative body for practicing intensivists in AUS & NZ. While there have been challenging times, without the fortitude and resilience of our pioneering members, we would not have the world class standard of intensive care services we have today. #ANZICS50years
