@Weathergami As you can see, anything more than a 30° temp spread (= more bottom-right) is reasonably rare here. Compare to Mason City yesterday where many parts of the graph near a 50-60° diff. Something about being near all this water! (Do wonder what the ~82/20 point is?!)

@Getlawnoffmy @RickRunGood @Golfbet @PGATOURLIVE Alas it's over. All it took was a 24' putt by Cam Young or a hole out by Fleetwood to make it happen. Oh well, we'll have to find something else to do. *Scottie starts winning by 10 shots every week for the next 5 months*

@Getlawnoffmy @RickRunGood @Golfbet @PGATOURLIVE He probably came up one revolution short. There's 9 people equal/behind him that could pass him. Including 3 equal to him. Amazing to watch. People sound like he's too boring, but he keeps doing Tiger-esque things like this.

@Getlawnoffmy @RickRunGood @Golfbet @PGATOURLIVE My goodness, he did! (Sorry, figured it was like most signature events and had no cut) On the number. He already has made up 5 shots on the cut, what's 6 or 7 more to a top 10. Just make it a little less stressful on us, eh buddy! Surely he can't compete for the win yet again!?!

@Getlawnoffmy @RickRunGood @Golfbet @PGATOURLIVE What in the world. Does he just get some special fun out of doing this every week? Though only having a 71 player field and no cut makes it a little more like cheating to count a top 10 anyways. Maybe he just decided he's tired of the streak?

@WxGabe Are the storms so briefly capable that only a tiny sliver of even fairly urbanized areas get proper rating? But it doesn't feel like ratings end up being quite fluky dart tosses like that would suggest, but that rougher storms storms on radar/visually tend towards higher ratings.

@WxGabe For example, in Oklahoma County, over the past 19 years of the EF scale: 46 tornadoes 0 EF5 1 EF4 4 EF3 1 EF2 15 EF1 13 have path length >= 5 miles That doesn't feel exceptionally high load. While satellite suggests to be that roughly 40% of land is urban developed.

This tracks well with the latest science. Wurman et al. (2021) estimate that 20% of tornadoes are capable of violent (EF4+) damage. If 1,200 tornadoes occur every year, then ~240 are capable of violent damage. This is further confirmed Lyza et al. 2024, who show that the original F-scale wind estimates are more reliable than the EF-scale estimates. What percentage of violent tornadoes are EF5s? Tough to say, since many tornadoes are underrated these days. But it’s not impossible to imagine that nearly half are 5s.
Matthew Cappucci@MatthewCappucci

Unpopular opinion: LOTS of tornadoes are EF5 strength… I’m talking 100+ every year. It’s not remotely rare. (Especially summertime drillbits and contracting springtime stovepipes late in their life cycles). EF5 DIs (damage indicators) are, however, rare.

@WxGabe So doesn't feel like near 20% are working at EF4+ if the urban region is reasonably represented (should be). Are good DIs that rare even in such regions of tight and often newer buildings?

@Getlawnoffmy @RickRunGood @Golfbet @PGATOURLIVE With Scheffler, Rose, McIlroy and plenty of others (Schauffele, Matsuyama, Spaun, Spieth, Morikawa, Gotterup, Hovland, Fleetwood, Bradley, etc)... plus a beautiful golf course... this week is going to be spectacular. Can he make 18?!?

@cyclonicwx Noted similar a few months ago. Not sure what to make of it either. Never seen birds/insects show up quite that strong. Synoptic flow only 5-10 mph from E/NE, so moving 20+ mph, I can't imagine insects could keep that up in bulk. Looks to be too cool for heavy bat activity?

Super Bowl MVP is gonna be a crazy decision. There's a real case Walker has been the single most important player in this game, but it also feels wrong not to give it to a defensive player given this historic performance. I'd lean Witherspoon. Murphy & Hall have cases, too.

@Getlawnoffmy @RickRunGood @Golfbet @PGATOURLIVE Oh baby, this got fun. And for all the people who said he doesn't move the needle even a little like Tiger... I sure tuned in to see if he'd make his Top 10... and sure enough, he's doing something crazy again!
