When former Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar said Prakash Chik Baraik — inducted into the BJP yesterday — was a cattle smuggler! Baraik was accused of illegal sand mining and extorting money from hospitals too. Falakata BJP MLA Deepak Barman had made the same allegations. No earlier than in February this year, then-TMC Rajya Sabha MP Baraik announced that a legal notice would be sent to Barman who had levelled allegations against Alipurduar MLA Suman Kanjilal, Zilla Parishad Sahakari Sabhadhipati Manoranjan Dey, and Madarihat Panchayat Samiti member Sajid Alam too. While the BJP can try to use Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Sushmita Dev as intellectual shields, the inclusion of Baraik directly proves the realpolitik nature of the defection—prioritising raw organisational numbers in the Rajya Sabha and fracturing the TMC’s north Bengal machinery over anti-corruption principles. Would it be unfair to say that the BJP leadership chose to completely swallow their own past words for immediate legislative mass?

News coming in from #PurbaMedinipur district of #WestBengal. Islamist Mofijul Islam(55 years old) raped a minor Hindu girl(4 years old) in #Kankurda village under the jurisdiction of #Mohishadol Police Station. Local Hindus got angry. They are protesting against this heinous crime. The Police already arrested accused Islamist Mofijul Islam. As tension is in the area, a massive force is deployed in the area. As per the local sources, Mofijul is a cycle mechanic and used to run a small shop. He allegedly dragged the minor Hindu girl inside his shop and raped her.
