@brickmack @Astro_Chuck No scenario where that’s cheaper than solar, LEDs, and batteries. Battlefield illumination? We have that already it’s called flares and NODs. Charitably they’ve just not thought on the wide-ranging negative impacts. At worst it’s a founder-brained gimmick to get rich off of VCs

@InyoEnjoyer @Astro_Chuck This and battle illumination are 99% of the use-case Do you think there's some guy in a volcano lair twirling his mustache at the thought of making it a bit brighter at night?

@InyoEnjoyer @Astro_Chuck Takes days or weeks to get that equipment to remote impoverished villages, still requires power on the ground, doesn't give as much illumination, and a pair of good night vision goggles costs more than the average annual income in many countries

@Astro_Chuck You are smoking pure copium if you think mass deployed orbital mirrors is more cost effective than building a battery on the ground. Or a geothermal plant, or a wind turbine.

Solar panels are awesome for about ~8 hours a day, but the world still generates most power from fossil fuels. Solar will cap out unless we deploy way more battery capacity faster. Orbital power can be a global investment in addressing the need for cheap, clean, power and it is applicable to the entire world once built, compared to a local battery/geothermal/nuclear/wind power plant. ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-…

@brickmack @Astro_Chuck Yeah we have to do it because no one has invented portable light sources or night vision goggles or IR cameras.

@InyoEnjoyer @Astro_Chuck Lighting up the night is the whole point, if it was just about power delivery you can do conventional beamed power. But that doesn't help disaster recovery or military operations, light delivered to remote areas instantly is important

@Robotbeat I don’t know how to explain to you that you should care about other living things on this planet, and that we owe it to them to be mindful of our impact.

Lumping the Night Destroyer in with actual good things is crazy work. “We can still conquer the darkness. We can still reach the end of night, for all life unlucky enough to live near a solar field or rich person. We can still find new ways to disrupt the biosphere.”
Christian Keil@pronounced_kyle

Believing that the age of human exploration is over is a skill issue. We can still: ‣ find ancient temples in the rainforest ‣ make the Salton Sea lush again ‣ re-fill the Great Salt Lake ‣ conquer the darkness ‣ map the sea floor ‣ explore the stars ‣ tame Antarctica

@Astro_Chuck The impacts it can address are what, solar panels don’t generate solar power at night? We have batteries for that. Building a big deployable mirror is cool but using it to light up the night for a gimmick is not.

I will be proud of the work this team did even if this turns out to be a bad idea, but I think it is a good one. It has the potential to help address the many impacts humans have on our ecosystem, at the risk of new, unstudied ones. Limited scale studies to assess this is a necessary and correct step of evaluating new technology.

The neighborhood I'm biking in. People want you to believe CA is negligent because it doesn't remove 800 vertical feet of brush above every house like this once a year. Idk how else you protect a house like this if a fire starts during a 70 mph wind event (which do happen here)

I've never run into this idiot previously, but with just this one post it's safe to say that he's an unreliable source on any topic.

@bobWaltzer NASA didn’t master landing a rocket because anything worth putting into space requires big-boy rockets. They’re not in the CubeSat business, because why would they be?

@rocketrepreneur Here's my test. Understanding the Constitution is complex. But much of the left disagrees with the opening of the Declaration. They believe that rights come from government.

@MooseAnony34735 Yeah, it’s fundamentally 60s-era tech with a bunch of micro-improvements. Just like how like 90% of car engines are 1910s tech with micro-improvements.

Hey, so y’all know how Likud stylized the Palestinian Authority’s welfare payments to poor families in the West Bank as “pay-to-slay” and used that as a justification for withholding ‘The Palestinian Authority’s own funds’ for this welfare program? Well, the Palestinian Authority commissioned an audit by New York City-based Alvarez and Marsal. I’m sure that you’ll be shocked to learn that the Palestinian Authority has literally just been paying welfare to poor families (almost explicitly to nudge poor Palestinians in the West Bank away from the cycle of violence that usually comes with poverty).

🧵New: The Palestinian Authority announced on Friday that an external audit of its new welfare program determined that it is being properly implemented to ensure that recipients are not incentivized to carry out attacks against Israelis. (1/17) timesofisrael.com/pa-says-extern…

@EstebanCortante @UrbanizeLA Do you know the age of the hotel they were trying to replace? Have passed by it on the K many times and it looks like it’s from the last 10-15 years.
