Back in 2020, I re-read “The Singularity is Near” by Ray Kurzweil. At the time, much of what he described—AI breakthroughs, brain-computer interfaces, and human-machine integration—felt like distant dreams. Sure, we’d made some strides, but it still seemed a long way off. Fast forward to today, and things are moving at a breathtaking pace. Since then, we’ve seen GPT-4, and more recently o1, push the boundaries of what AI language models can do, and Neuralink’s “Telepathy” technology making direct brain-to-computer communication a reality. Not to mention that self-driving cabs are out and about, bringing autonomous transportation to our streets. And this is just the tip of the iceberg… As I picked up “The Singularity is Nearer”, I can’t help but feel that the “fantastic future” Kurzweil envisioned is no longer a distant speculation but an imminent reality. The merging of human potential and AI capabilities is on our doorstep, opening possibilities that seemed like pure science fiction just a few years ago. 📖 goodreads.com/book/show/4502…

Hej Balázs and Patrik 👋
We’re curious: what’s the focus for the Code Adjacent track 2026? “Code Adjacent is where code becomes a force shaping physical, biological, and societal systems. In 2026 we’re looking at everything from neurotechnology to climate-scale computation.”

Adding more GPUs will never make a machine conscious. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Roger Penrose just dismantled the entire AI race’s core assumption. Right now, the industry operates on one belief. Build massive data centers. Scale the models. AGI will just “wake up.” Penrose destroys this completely. Penrose: “There is this sort of view that once you make a computer complicated enough or something, it suddenly becomes aware. I just don’t believe that. There’s no reason to believe that.” A machine can compute better than any human alive. But computation is not awareness. Penrose: “There is something quite different involved in understanding things, in being aware of things, of feeling things, which is not part of computations.” We’re confusing rule-following with actual intelligence. Penrose: “The keyword is the word ‘understanding.’ You can follow rules alright, but we don’t understand what we’re doing. The understanding is the key point.” Models today are exceptional at processing data. At mimicking logic. But true understanding requires consciousness. Penrose: “It doesn’t make sense to say of a device that it understands something if it’s not even aware of it. There is something much more profound in being conscious of something.” And here’s what should terrify every AI lab on earth. Penrose: “I believe that the brain is following the laws of physics, sure. We don’t have a good picture of the laws of physics.” Penrose: “Quantum mechanics is not an answer to the way the universe operates. It’s a partial answer. It’s incomplete.” We’re trying to engineer synthetic consciousness using classical computation. While biological consciousness likely operates on physics we haven’t even discovered yet. The race to AGI isn’t just an engineering problem. It’s a frontier science problem. The labs are hiring engineers. The problem might require physicists who don’t exist yet.

@Tesla Will there be a subscription price difference for those who bought EAP vs not, similarly to the price difference when upgrading to FSD?

Try it, you’ll like it
Coffee and Grit@CoffeeNGrit

I just got back from a 4 hour demo drive in a new Tesla Model Y Premium and I’m still kind of buzzing. I've watched the videos. I’ve read the stories. I thought I understood what FSD was. I did not, not even close! Because when you’re actually in it and you let it do its thing, it’s not a “cool feature.” It feels like you just stepped a few years into the future! I tried everything. FSD, regen braking, the acceleration, Summon, self parking, super charging and switching between driving and FSD on the fly. And man… FSD was the part that messed with my brain in the best way! It handled city streets like a pro! It rolled through parking lots, found spots, and self parked. It went right through construction zones with workers out there directing traffic with flags, and it just… did the right thing. Smooth, not sketchy at all! I kept waiting for the moment I’d have to grab the wheel and save it. I never had to take over! Didn't even have one moment where I felt like I might need to! Then the built in Grok planned a scenic route that was actually fun, not just “fastest route” boring. And while it was driving, I played with Grok in Assistant mode and Unhinged mode and I’m not gonna lie, I was laughing out loud because it felt like having a smart, slightly chaotic co pilot that still stays useful. Regen braking was another shock. It takes like five minutes and your brain clicks and you start thinking, why does every car not feel like this? The acceleration is stupid quick! Summon was straight up wild to see in person! Watching that car drive through the parking lot to meet me with no one on board was crazy! I’m telling you, experiencing it is completely different than hearing about it! If you’ve been on the fence, go do a demo drive. Give it time. Try it on real streets, real parking lots, real situations. Because after today, I get it! I’m ready to buy.. NOW! What do you want to try most, FSD, regen braking, Summon, or just feeling that acceleration? @elonmusk - this is truly the future! I am amazed!

My next longevity protocol may be rocking myself to sleep. Lateral rocking at 15 cycles/min can increase memory consolidation by 208% and improve sleep. But..it only works on young people. Older people saw worse sleep due to vestibular decay. I wonder if it will work on me.

I was previously told Apple Health is to blame for inaccurate data in @Strava for treadmill runs, but I find that hard to believe when I compare this same constant pace treadmill run synced to @runna via Strava vs imported straight from AH. 🤨

@LinkN01 I mean it would be lame for Sweden to be too far behind other EU countries already offering demo FSD rides. 🤞

FSD in Sweden 🇸🇪 Yesterday, Tesla received final approval from the Swedish Transport Administration to test FSD in the municipality of Nacka. This means that, for the first time, Tesla can conduct FSD testing in a Swedish urban environment. Nacka is located right next to Stockholm City, which was the first municipality to deny Tesla approval.

@zollotech I've literally been spending much less time on YouTube lately because I've been so frustrated by the recommendations. And refreshing doesn't seem to "re-roll" and give me new suggestions either.

Is it me or have YouTube video suggestions been terrible lately? They are either all of the same creator or things that are months to years old. I forgot about some of my favorites until recently because I hadn’t seen them.
