I drew Franks attention to cur a few years ago, it seemed he was not aware of it:-) @FrankmcnallyIT Curiously, it was in mathematics that Dinneen trained in (at UCD) to masters levels.

@RIAdawson 4/4 And here is the dictionary's entry for "cur" (putting or to put in English), so mercilessly lampooned by Myles na gCopaleen.

Don McQuillan was THE most elegant and impressive maths lecturer I had at @UCDMathStat in the 1975-1979 period, against stiff competition from Ted Hurley and Tom Laffey. He gave really superb MSc lectures on homological algebra in the 1978-1979 academic year. There was no text.

The genial Head of Maths when I started in UCD (I think it was he who introduced the rolling headship whereby all the professors got a shot at leading). Clever, clever man. His beautiful daughter Niamh was the cellist in my string quartet, named Draíocht (magic) at his suggestion

Now here’s a novelty on the Möbius strip for you – the French have a thing called ‘coup de poing’ = ‘blow with the fist’, punching the strip so it forms a regular hexagon in outline! First recorded in ‘L'Illustration’, by Arthur Good (Tom Tit), 1892. @panlepan

Möbius strip logo of the Parton Oil Company, US, 1980. Note the oil drop defining the inner space. Very nice! #MöbiusStrip

A young Geoffrey Hinton (AI pioneer) in his office; a hitherto unknown Escher enthusiast! I can just about make out ‘Horseman’ on the calendar.

What is mathematics? “It’s about seeing connections, solving puzzles, knowing how things work & finding a bit of magic in everyday things. It’s always a thrill to see Maths Week participants, in class or in the street, have an Aha! moment.” mathsweek.ie/2024/news @mathsweek
