Not only is it illegal to burn land at this time of the year, it is totally irresponsible, so please don’t start one. It damages habitats, kills wildlife, pollutes the air, and puts immense pressure on our emergency services. #NoExcuses

The fires raging on some uplands across this island are appalling to see & devastating for wildlife. As Minister for Land Use & Biodiversity, I call on all farm organisations to publicly remind their upland members that this is illegal and highly destructive, and to be vigilant.

Some photos from fieldwork last week in Black Valley/Glencar area of Uíbh Ráthach #Kerry. A real multi-layered landscape - prehistoric stone alignments and rock art, relict walls partly submerged by peat, medieval/early modern huts and animal pens. Majority are not on SMR or RMP

Walking around it always strikes me that the best way to start a real recovery of native woodlands is to allow the pockets which remain to expand naturally. Presently these are often actively suppressed whilst we pay for woodland creation elsewhere I made a short video about it
