Nigeria was never meant to be a poor country. It is a nation sitting on a mountain of gold while its people struggle to afford bread. The country is brimming with resource potential, including: 37 billion barrels of crude oil and 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. 3 billion metric tonnes of iron ore. 42 billion tonnes of bitumen. A 600km greenstone belt rich with gold. 2 billion tonnes of low-sulfur, eco-friendly coal. How does a country sitting on the largest oil and gas reserves in Africa hit a record poverty metric in April 2026? Nigeria should be the continent's powerhouse, yet its citizens are being crushed by triple digit inflation and a currency in freefall. More than 130 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty. A country so rich in resources shouldn't be this poor in reality, logic dictates that a nation with everything shouldn't be struggling for anything.
