Mycorrhizal Networks as Symbiotic Support Systems for Plant Growth and Plant Diversity. This great 35-year old Nature paper by Grime, David Read et al. fascinated me so much that I started to study the mycorrhizal symbiosis! – Still highly relevant! MvdH nature.com/articles/32842…

*gestures to my unmown yard* "I'm choosing to let my yard grow wild, to help the pollinators." *waves at a stack of dirty dishes* "This, too, is for the pollinators." *trips over a pile of dirty laundry" "Pollinators."

Do you want to know why we are so fascinated by the #symbiosis between #mycorrhizal #fungi and land plants? Have a look at this picture. Left a grassland microcosm inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and right a microcosm without. Initially they were exactly the same!

It started as a "hmm that's curious" observation of native shrubs inhibiting pine growth and has led to a cool story (authors.elsevier.com/c/1ggGs3JGmRIr…) - we found that both metabolites and microbes influenced by the heath repressed mycorrhizal fungal development necessary for pine growth

Researchers have discovered the first known "virovore," an organism that feeds on viruses. Probably there are many others like it -- an entire, previously unknown food chain. One day into 2023, and already things are going topsy turvy. eurekalert.org/news-releases/… #ecology #life

When setting up our PI’s lab in grad school we named all the equipment after characters from Arrested Development. It lead to some confusion when Dr. Tobias Fünke (the -80) started to defrost in the middle of the night…

@ftmaestre @mikebadz7 @GlobalChangeBio For someone who has read a paper or two about old trees, this is not surprising, but it really can feel unexpected especially thinking about replanted forests and how how quickly seedlings grow and therefore must be sucking up CO2, right? Right???!
